About the Item

Ernest Walbourn British, (1872-1927) By the Pond Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 24 inches x 36 inches Size including frame: 31.5 inches x 43.5 inches Ernest Walbourn was painter of landscape scenes often depicting young women and children. He was born on 16 February 1872 in Dalston, Middlesex the second of five children. Initially, his father was against him being an artist but later relented helping him set up his own studio in the grounds of the family home and paying for his art tuition. In 1895, Walbourn moved to Chingford, Essex from where he started exhibiting at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Over the next 25 years he continued to exhibit at major shows. From 1897, he exhibited works at the Royal Academy including titles such as "Poppies among the Peas" and "On the Allotments". He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists as well as at provincial galleries. His work was widely admired and he sold many of his works through the London Art dealers Sampson & Wolfe. In 1906, he married Eva Gardner who helped him with some of the backgrounds of his larger canvasses and later became an artist in her own right. Walbourn's paintings show a great understanding of the effects of sunlight and shade. With his inclusion of figures and flowers he truly captures the beauty of the Victorian landscape. Presentation: The work is housed in a new English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

Émile Vernon French, (1872-1920) Picking Flowers Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1913 Image size: 25 inches x 20.75 inches Size including frame: 37.25 inches x 33 inches A delightful painting of a young woman picking flowers in a garden by Émile Vernon. As well as gathering yellow roses, the woman has also picked wild flowers including buttercups and daisies. Paul Émile Vernon was born in Blois, in the Loire Valley region of France on 14 March, 1872. Although little is recorded of his early life, he is known to have attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Tours where he received a first prize in drawing. He went on to study at the Paris fine art academy under William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) and Augustus Truphème (1836-1898). Influenced by Bouguereau in his subject matter, Vernon began to specialise in paintings of women and children, often surrounded by or holding flowers. In addition to portraits, he also produced a number of floral still life works. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1898 and also exhibited at the Tour fine art and decorative fair. In addition to exhibiting in his own country, he also exhibited in England in 1904 at the Royal Academy from an address at 2 Upstall Street, Camberwell. In 1907, Vernon travelled to New York and again in 1908 where he stayed both times at the Hotel...
