“Birches and Huckleberry, October Morning Matunuck, c. 1925” by Frank Convers Mathewson (American, 1862-1941).
A stunningly beautiful autumn view of Matunuck, Rhode Island by Mathewson, who was one of the key figures associated with the Matunuck artist colony (along with William Trost Richards, Anna Richards Brewster, Philip Leslie Hale, etc). The work captures a crisp October morning with glowing red huckleberry bushes, pale birch trunks, and distant coastal cottages tucked into the horizon. Mathewson’s brushwork is lively and confident, using warm russets, oranges, yellows, and deep greens to showcase the atmospheric hillside. It is a landscape of crisp air, low morning light, and that fleeting October brilliance that seems to burn brightest just before winter begins its approach.
The work is oil on board and is signed in the lower left/further inscribed on the verso. It is housed in its exceptional original Newcomb Macklin gilt frame, ready for display.

About the artist:
Frank Convers Mathewson was born in Barrington, Rhode Island, in 1862. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian with Jean Paul Laurens and at the National School of Decorative Art, and also studied painting in Italy with Frank Vincent DuMond. He later maintained a studio in Munich with Stacy Tolman and painted for many years in New York City. Known for landscapes, florals, and marine paintings, Mathewson worked in a plein air realist manner and developed a deep connection to Matunuck, Rhode Island.
Mathewson began painting in Matunuck in 1911 from a cottage studio later deeded to him by Everitte and Carolyn Chaffee. Located along the Old Post Road, the studio placed him within a close artistic community that included Anna Richards Brewster, Eleanor Richards Price, Carla Atkinson, and members of the Hale family. Through the socially prominent Chaffees, Mathewson became well known in Matunuck and received numerous commissions from their friends and neighbors, painting local houses, gardens, historic homes, and views of the area’s summer residents.
Among his favored subjects were autumn views of Matunuck and colonial houses, such as the Commodore Perry House and the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Everett Hale Jr. Mathewson was a member of the New York Watercolor Club, Providence Art Club, Providence Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, South County Art Association, and North Shore Art Association. His work was exhibited at the Boston Art Club, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago, and abroad in Paris and Turin, and is represented in collections including the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence Art Club, University Club in Providence, Boston Art Club, and South County Rhode Island Art Association. He died in 1941.
Condition: Very good overall condition. Tiny line of inpainting in lower left corner. No other apparent restoration. Original Newcomb Macklin frame with age appropriate wear. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed!
