About the Item
Gabriel Amat Pagés (Barcelona, August 2, 1899 - September 26, 1984) was a Spanish architect, draftsman and painter who achieved great recognition as a watercolorist.
Amat is the son of José Amat y Aymar and Joana Pagès Marcet. He was the second of four siblings from a family of rural origins, but closely related to art and culture. His brother Josep, the third, was also a prominent painter of the time.
He studied architecture at the University of Barcelona at a time when the direction exercised by Lluis Domènech i Montaner between 1905 and 1919 gave him a marked tendency towards the values of modernism. He finished his studies in June 1926, although he did not obtain his degree until 1929. He shared these architectural studies with those of drawing at the San Jorge School of Fine Arts and at the Llotja in Barcelona. As a student, he already stood out for his ability to draw, having obtained the first prize in the 1922 Catalan Association of Students Contest and also this year he was awarded in the Official Hall of the Barcelona Fine Arts exhibition.
