George Cuitt
A distant landscape view of Langton Hall in Richmondshire, North Yorkshire

About

A distant view of Langton Hall in Richmondshire, North Yorkshire Oil painting on canvas 76.2 x 63.5 cm / 30 x 25 in and contained in its antique caved and gilded frame. Provenance: private collection Derbyshire until acquired by us. Painted circa 1810 Cuitt was born at Moulton, in Yorkshire, and having shown a natural taste for drawing and design was sent to Italy at the expense of Sir Thomas Dundas, whose family had already been painted by him. He arrived in Italy late in 1769 and is recorded in Rome by Easter 1770 where he stayed until 1775. Cuitt was sent to Italy with the young architect Thomas Harrison. He is recorded sharing rooms with Harrison in 1770 and 1775, Cuitt and Harrison both took their opportunities for study very earnestly for six years at Rome, the young artist developing his refined landscape style, suffused with southern light, which so characterise his later topographical painting in England. Harrison became a protégé of Pope Clement XIV, developing numerous architectural plans Cuitte returned to England in 1775, and in 1776 he exhibited at the Royal Academy 'The Infant Jupiter fed with goat's milk and honey.' He afterwards exhibited portraits and landscapes, his last contribution being in 1798. Owing to frequent attacks of fever, presumably malaria caught in Rome, he was unable to reside in London, and he finally settled at Richmond in Yorkshire. Here he found constant employment in the commissions given him by gentlemen whose parks and residences were in his neighbourhood. His death occurred in 1818. His portraits are elaborately finished, although very thinly painted, whilst his earlier landscapes show much ability and feeling in their execution. Their tonality and colouration are highly idiosyncratic and easily recognised.
