About

A very large fine 19th century landscape oil on canvas depicting a shepherd and a small flock of sheep resting on a summer afternoon near the village of ‘Froggatt, Derbyshire’ by the eminent Victorian painter George Turner (1843-1910). The painting is signed by the artist. It is sold in a superb quality gold leaf frame. As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that fully insured, tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary. During the 1880’s and 90’s Turner’s talents as a painter earned him a nationwide reputation as ‘Derbyshire’s John Constable’, and he became teacher to a number of other notable painters of the time including Louis Bosworth Hurt, David Bates, David Payne, and his own son William Lakin Turner. I have seen a great many pictures by George Turner and I can say without doubt that this is the finest example of his work that I have ever seen. Dimensions: (framed) 119cm x 88cm (46¾” x 34¾”) Dimensions: (canvas only) 103cm x 70cm (40½” x 27½”) Medium: Oil on canvas. Provenance: Private UK collection.
