Gustave Courbet
Waves Breaking

c. 1860

About

Signed lower left. This work depicts waves breaking on the coast with a boat struggling in the squall. Courbet worked with an entourage of pupils and painted and collaborated with them on many works - often doing the finishing off of the work and adding his signature or completing the volume of the work and letting the pupil finish the work. His main assistants were Cherubino Pata and Maurice Ordinaire.
