Gustave Flasschoen (1868-1940) Next to the Bougainvillea Orientalist Painting 19th Century Oil on wood panel signed low left Framed by Gault (Paris - St Honoré) Dim wood : 40 X 30 cm Dim frame : 59 50 cm Gustave Flasschoen (1868-1940) Belgian painter born in Saint-Jans-Molenbeek, 20 May 1868 – Died in Brussels, 3 September 1940 Painter, watercolorist, draughtman, engraver, illustrator Gustave Flasschoen studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Molenbeek (Brussels), between 1887 and 1890, at François Stroobant’s workshop ). His style evolved during the interbellum into an impressionist realism that he used with great flexibility, elegant line and a bright color palette in his North African scenes and landscapes. After many study trips in Spain, the Netherlands, Russia and North Africa, he successfully focused on orientalism. In 1930 he held an exhibition in Antwerp with his paintings from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Gustave Flasschoen never joined a specific group.
