Paysage à la meule
(Landscape with Haystack)
Oil on canvas
Signed and dedicated “Avec mes meilleurs voeux / Lebasque” (lower right)
In this brilliant oil on canvas, Henri Lebasque captures a radiant landscape with his signature vibrant palette. Known as "the painter of the good life," this work, entitled Paysage à la meule, reflects this ethos beautifully, epitomizing the pastoral beauty and vivid vitality for which Lebasque was so famed. Inspired by Claude Monet, Lebasque created his own Haystacks series, and this painting is one of its masterworks.
In this painting, you can see Lebasque drawing first-hand inspiration from Monet’s acclaimed Haystacks series of 1891 in nearby Giverny. While Monet’s tightly framed compositions focus on the immediacy and changing light of the haystacks, Lebasque adopts a broader, panoramic perspective, inviting the viewer to explore the surrounding landscape and immerse themselves in its beauty. The swift brushstrokes and harmonious palette of Paysage à la meule demonstrate Lebasque’s mastery of these innovations, blending dynamic technique with an atmosphere of serene tranquility.
Henri Lebasque is remembered as a remarkable Post-Impressionist painter. Rooting himself in the Parisian art scene in the early 20th century, he exhibited in the influential Salon des Indépendants alongside artists like Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne, Edouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard. He was also an important influence and regular exhibitor at the Salon d’Automne, along with Henri Matisse and other artist friends who would become known as The Fauves. His friendships with these artists and his visits to the south of France influenced Lebasque’s rich use of color, but his work retained a distinctive subtlety and fluidity, evidenced here in this mesmerizing sun-lit landscape.
Today, Lebasque’s works can be found in museums around the world, including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, the de Young in San Francisco, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.

Henri Lebasque
Henri Lebasque (25 September 1865 – 7 August 1937) was a French post-impressionist painter. He was born at Champigné (Maine-et-Loire). Lebasque was a founding member of the Salon d'Automne in 1903 with his friend Henri Matisse. Two years later, a group of artists exhibited there including Georges Rouault, André Derain, Édouard Vuillard, and Matisse. Lebasque also became friends with artists such as Gustave Rouault, Raoul Dufy, Louis Valtat, and Henri Manguin, the last of whom introduced Lebasque to the South of France. His time in South of France would lead to a radical transformation in Lebasque’s paintings, changing his colour palette forever. Other travels included the Vendée, Normandy, and Brittany. His work is represented in French museums, notably Angers, Geneva (Petit Palais), Lille (Musée des Beaux-Arts), Nantes, and Paris (Musée d’Orsay). Lebasque died at Cannet, Alpes Maritimes in 1937.
