About the Item

Lore à Saint Cyr sur Loire Scene on a double-sided sheet by Henri Miloch (1898-1979) signed lower right on both sides watercolour and gouache painting on artist's paper, unframed Image: 10 x 13 inches (landscape), sheet 12.25 x 15.25 inches You have a choice of which scene to frame here as there is a painting on each side of the sheet: a delightful Tours river scene painting or a town gateway painting by the highly regarded painter, Henri Miloch. Both sides are signed. The Tours landscape depicts a tranquil river scene with a figure in a small rowing boat, and is inscribed "Tours" on the lower edge of the painting image. There is some indistinct wording lower left and a date '58. Tours is the largest city in the Centre-Val de Loire region. This work forms part of a collection we currently hold by Miloch. Henri Miloch was born in Trieste (Italy) in 1898 but studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a member of the Society of French Artists. His life and work was very much centred in Brittany, in north west France, much of his work portrays Breton maritime life in the various ports, and local town observations, especially in the Concarneau area where he worked and exhibited for much of his artistic career. From 1959 he also had a workshop in Tours (Val de Loire). condition report: Both images in good order with good, strong, and clear colour. No tears or creases to the sheet (which is quite stiff watercolour paper). The river landscape side has toning, paint drops, and marks in the white edge margins but it does not affect the image. The town gate scene has margin edge toning - again not affecting the image. The very corners of the sheet have slight folds and roughness but the corners would not be seen when either side is framed.
