About the Item

A large, sweeping Michigan summer vista by the accomplished American painter, Ida Josephine Burgess (1855-1934). Burgess gives us a high vantage point over a lush hill pasture descending toward a broad lake or river, its surface catching the silvery light of a cloud-filled summer day. The composition opens gradually, from the green foreground scattered with stones and shrubs, to the line of poplars and buildings near the water, and finally to distant fields touched with gold. Her brushwork is loose and responsive, especially in the sky and grasses, where the paint seems to move with the weather. This work was painted at a moment when American artists were increasingly turning to regional scenery for subjects of national character. However, it stands not just as a pleasant Michigan view, but also a confident exhibition picture by a woman artist active at the beginning of the twentieth century, when such recognition still required determination and distinction. This work is particularly important within Burgess's oeuvre as it was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago's Annual Exhibition in 1901 (erroneously catalogued as "The Mill Pasture") - the only painting by Burgess included that year. It was further illustrated and discussed in the November 1901 issue of the Brush and Pencil magazine, which provides insight into her summer trips to the picturesque hills of Michigan. This work is oil on canvas and is signed and dated in the lower left. It is housed in an exceptional baroque style Newcomb Macklin frame, ready for display.
