Vaches dans un paysage de printemps près d'un chateau (Cattle in a Spring Landscape near a Chateau) Original Signed Barbizon Oil Painting on Canvas, c. 1866 Jacques Alfred Brielman (1836-1892) Jacques Alfred Brielman was born on April 7, 1834 in Paris, France. He was an early pupil of Eugène Lavieille. Brielman exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1866 to 1891. His paintings were well-received by the public and critics. He was awarded a medal at the Salon of 1882. At the World’s Fair of 1889, Jacques Alfred Brielman was honored with a Bronze Medal. Besides his frequent public exhibitions, Brielman was frequently awarded public art commissions, such as works produced for the Port of Sainte Nazaire and Le Havre, France. The Department of Commerce of the Loire honored him, as did Le Seine Ministry of Public Works. In early nineteenth-century France, landscape painting was narrowly circumscribed by an aesthetic code upheld by the conservative French Academy. Painters and sculptors were rigorously trained in the Neoclassical tradition to emulate artists of the Renaissance and classical antiquity. In the hierarchy of historical subjects recognized by the Academy, pure landscape painting was not a privilege. At the time, young artists were flocking to the Louvre to study seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish landscapes, a naturalist tradition long practiced in the Netherlands. The exhibition of John Constable’s pictures at the Paris Salon of 1824 further set the stage for this new genre in France. In warm weather, artists now ventured outside Paris to work from nature, traveling to the royal parks of Saint-Cloud and Versailles and to more far-flung areas of the country. No destination was more popular than the Forest of Fontainebleau. Once the unmapped preserve of kings and their royal hunting parties (given the proximity of the hunting lodge turned Château de Fontainebleau), the Forest of Fontainebleau became a sanctuary for the growing leisure classes, for whom a train ride from Paris was an easy jaunt. It was to one of those villages, Barbizon, that artists journeyed beginning in the 1820’s These pioneering painters of nature came to be called the "Barbizon School." The “Barbizon School” of artists were so named due to their work outdoors in the area of France near the village of Barbizon, in the vicinity of the Fontainebleau forest. They chose to paint en plein aire, i.e., outdoors, away from the studio, in the “real world” of forests, fields, farms and countryside. The Barbizon School, inspired by the example of the English painter John Constable, represented a return to nature and a firm rejection of what they saw as the dangers of oncoming industrialization. The Barbizon school of painters were part of an art movement towards Realism in art, which arose in the context of the dominant Romantic Movement of the time. Some of the most prominent features of this school are its tonal qualities, color, loose brushwork, and softness of form, as witnessed today in "Vaches dans un paysage de printemps près d'un chateau." Among this group were found Jean-Francois Millet, Theodore Rousseau, Jacques Alfred Brielman, Narcisse Diaz de la Peña, and many other painters of renown. . The work of Jacques Alfred Brielman was quite popular in his day, as the Barbizon Movement continued to flourish, prior to the major upheaval of the Impressionist upset. Barbizon was more than just a place; it was an encompassing motif. The artists of the Barbizon School showed us the rapidly disappearing rural path to painterly “truth” well before the Impressionists trod the same forest and fields, carrying with them their factory-made satchels with metallic tubes of new pigments and their modern ways of seeing. Note also the beautiful original French Second Empire antique gilt frame. It is itself an object of great beauty, featuring a classical frieze of palmettos, an outer border of acanthus leaves and an inner border of ribbon knots.
