Jason Middlebrook
Sky Series #7

2022

About the Item

Hudson, NY - based artist Jason Middlebrook. Middlebrook takes inspiration from lived experience and the natural world with his signature hardwood paintings. Familiar yet enigmatic, the sky in its various forms serves as muse in "Skies." Never the same twice, the sky is ever-changing, differing dramatically from place to place and throughout each day. At times seemingly benevolent and at others cruel, the vast sky is in constant diaphanous conversation with the landscape and activity below. Middlebrook’s signature “canvas” of polished cross-sections of hardwood speaks to the artist’s deep tie to nature and its innate universal appeal. Striated with undulating rings, and sourced from a mill located in the Berkshires, local indigenous hardwoods such as cherry, walnut, maple, elm, white oak, cottonwood, and Cairo walnut are among the hardwoods Middlebrook uses in his works. Wonderfully organic and irregular, the silhouette of works featured in Jason Middlebrook’s "Skies" balance the airy weightlessness of line with the embodiment of slow time. Based on skyscapes observed during his travels and throughout a lifetime living in various locations around the United States, memories of transitional skies overhead connect to specific experiences. In this way, infinite variations of the sky are interpreted and abstracted across works, taking form via cues in color, form, and line.

David B. Smith Gallery is proud to present "Song Cycle," a solo exhibition by Chicago, IL-based artist Robert Burnier. About this new body of work Burnier writes: "Song Cycle" is made in reference to a summer of deep listening to Marvin Gaye's musical ouvre, studying its complex histories and manifestations. A freedom and beauty of expression; a quest to bring unity to a divided body and mind, or their near inversion. The folded and compressed forms of the works in this exhibition retain a history of their own becoming -- the colors in ancient African...

  • Botany in Distress #4
    By Jason Middlebrook
    Located in Denver, CO
Jason Middlebrook has long been interested in man’s complex and often adversarial relationship with nature. The straight lines and precise angles in his paintings might be found in math, architecture, and industry more readily than in grassy meadows or dense forests. But relying solely on this sort of metonymy is limiting. A more nuanced read reveals some of Middlebrook’s geometric patterns are also inspired by nature. Crystals and geodes...

Wonderful post-modern wall sculpture that is part of artist Jack Reilly (American, b. 1950) "Classics Series" solo exhibition held at the Boritzer-Gray Gallery in October, 1989 at Los Angeles. This unique piece juxtaposes classical motifs with 3 dimensional stacked geometrically modern shapes and hues. The combination of linear structure and color field painting with illusionary space resulted in a unique synthesis of abstraction and pictorial depth, which was sometimes referred to as "Abstract Illusionism." Signed and dated on verso "Jack Reilly, October 1989." Image size: 19"H x 29"W x 3.5"D Reilly's early work reflected various influences of prominent artists of the time including Frank Stella, Elsworth Kelly...

Theo Meier (1908-1982) View of the Village of Iseh, painted from the house of Theo Signed and dated 48 Theo Meier lower left Oil on canvas, 68.5 x 50 cm In original frame carved by the artist. Note: Theo Meier arrived in Bali in 1936 with the intention of going on to Tahiti where he had been before. However Bali turned out to be the paradise he had been searching for in his dreams and he had no desire any more to move elsewhere. Bali at that time was still a very traditional place where society lived according to an acient religious system and in a luscious tropical setting the modern world was ignored. Here he met Walter Spies...
