A Mountain Dwelling: 19th Century landscape bearing Corot signature on verso

ca 1860

About the Item

Our 19th Century painting of a mountain dwelling, bathed in soft light light is a fresh and relevant as if it had been created yesterday. Painted certainly in plein air on the motif, the work foreshadows impressionism and is painted in the Realist style that was one of the main currents in the aftermaths of the French Revolution. It is unsigned but interestingly, bears Corot's signature in pencil on the back. On the verso is also a dat - 1850- and information about the site depicted in French, which I have unfortunately not been able to decipher. I have only been able to make out a few words such as : "Butte" (Heights), and "cascade", referring probably to a waterfall nearby. Shrouded in mystery, the dimensions for the painting measured without the frame are 13 x 32 cm.
