Georges Planes
French Impressionist Painting, The River Barges

1930s

About the Item

Early 20th Century view of barges at a riverbank by French artist Georges Planes. The painting is signed bottom right. The painting is very nicely framed in a blue painted wood frame with a deep insert and gilt filet. We have another painting by the same artist, a view of Rouen, in the same framing, which would make a pair with this work. The other painting is dated 1933. A charming view of three barges, or peniche as they are known in France, tied to the river bank, their bulk reflected in the passing river. On the bank a figure is walking towards us, giving some idea as to the large scale of the boats. Planes has introduced colour into his treatment of the riverbank, his beloved mauves and blues and as ever his characteristic drawing to give line under the blocks of colour. A very pleasing and accomplished composition. A noted and accomplished artist Georges Planes was a student of Fernand Cormon. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français of which he was a member from 1923.

The artist has been inspired by the painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe by Édouard Manet. They have created an intimate scene of four friends sharing a picnic in the countryside. The central character is naked whereas the others are in various stages of undress. The picnic is spread out on a fine white cloth, the wicker picnic basket to one side. A dog looks on from the side-lines hoping for something from the picnic. A very charming and intimate scene colourfully rendered. Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon...

The painting is initial signed, located and dated bottom left. Presented in a patinated wood frame. There is a trade label for the Rowley Gallery in Kensington Church Street to the backboard. A charming Impressionist painting of an iconic Parisian view. The Seine with all its reflected colours passing beneath the arches of an ancient bridge, a church spire just visible through the canopy of the trees, colourful boats moored, a fisherman sitting in the shade of the riverbank hopeful of a catch. The artist has managed to capture all the languid, quiet beauty of the scene in the midst of a bustling metropolis which is Paris. The water in the Seine is full of colour and nuance and the green of the trees give the painting a freshness. A very accomplished composition beautifully executed. Le Pont Marie crossing the Seine in Paris. The bridge links the Île Saint-Louis to the quai de l'Hôtel de Ville and is one of three bridges designed to allow flow between the Île Saint-Louis and the Left and Right banks...
