Jim Woodson
Resolving Contingent Permutations, High Desert

2008

About the Item

The High Desert near Abiquiu is the inspiration for Texas artist Jim Woodson. His paintings are a unity of the intuitive process of painting, personal ideology, and the desert landscape. Woodson embraces the concepts of time, space, and knowledge in his work. He received his BFA from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in 1965, and his MFA from The University of Texas at Austin in 1967. In 2014, Woodson was distinguished as Professor Emeritus at TCU, where he had been on the faculty since 1974. In 2013, Woodson was appointed Texas State Artist of the Year (2D) by the Texas State Legislature and the Texas Commission on the Arts. About his recent work, Jim Woodson states: "These paintings draw inspiration from the high deserts of the southwest, mostly in Texas and New Mexico. These "outer" landscapes are modified by "inner ones." The inner concerns are a dialogue with dreams, memories, thought fragments and streams of consciousness. By the contextual placement or overlay of inner and outer, I hope to convey my own thoughts about the nature of imagination: to achieve a sense of the imagination’s movement (tempo) against a relatively unchanging environment (duration)."

  • Garden In Luca, White Chair
    Located in Westport, CT
"My life as a painter began in the late 1950s when abstraction was “The only game in town”. I followed and progressed through gesture, organic and finally, geometric non-objective painting. The radical move for me was to discover that the real world of landscape lurked behind all that past work. My childhood in the mountains of Pennsylvania pervaded my “way of seeing” and I wanted to investigate and celebrate the infinite variety of tone, color and composition that I found around me. Sky, the structure of trees, mist and water appeared to fill a hunger to look again and again. There was mystery and danger lurking behind the beauty, and my aim was to try to avoid the cliché and explore the infinite structure of the visual landscape. Now I use my camera as a sketchbook and search for images that seem to offer odd structure and “mystery”. I shoot multiple points of view, cull, crop, and mostly discard. The surviving photographs become the catalyst for the paintings and the process is always a mediation between memory and the small image pinned to my easel...
