John Edward Phillips (Czech/American, 1887-1964) (John Hyde Phillips) Signed: J Phillips (Lower, Right) " Fishing on the Atlantic Coast ", circa 1924-25 (Near Rockport) Oil on Canvas 24" x 30" Housed in a 2 1/2" Period Ornamented Frame in Gold Metal Leaf Overall Size: 28 1/2" x 34 1/2" It is possible that this painting is listed in the Annual Exhibition Record of The Art Institute of Chicago 1888-1950 as " Atlantic Fisher Village ". Light craquelure. In otherwise very good condition. John Edward Phillips, was born in Czechoslovakia in 1887, emigrating at the age of three with his family to the U.S. where they settled in Chicago. By 1910, Phillips was a member of the Palette and Chisel Club there, becoming secretary in 1913. As a fine art painter he exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1931. He was also a commercial artist creating designs for fine porcelain dishware, wallpaper, packaging for commercial products, floor plan designs, political poster, and most notably 11 cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post from May 6, 1939 to October 30, 1943. While working for the Saturday Evening Post he went by John Hyde Phillips.
