About the Item

"Tonolea - Monument Valley", oil on board, 1947. A dynamic, rhythmic, and colorful mid-century Modern painting by the highly regarded San Francisco Bay Area artist John Charles Haley (American, 1905-1991). Signed upper left. Provenance: the artist's estate. In great condition, the colors fresh and bright, framed. Modernist paintings by Haley of the American Southwest are scarce. This was painted as the artist moved away from the jaunty American Realism he had become famous for, and into pure abstraction. It anticipates his Crystal Series from the 1950s and reflects his interest in stained glass. Image (sight): 24 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches; frame: 30 1/4 x 35 1/4 inches. John and his wife Monica spent many summers in the American southwest with friends in Taos and Santa Fe. They loved the Navajo and other native cultures. In this painting the artist captures the energy and majesty of Monument Valley and a Navajo shepherd with flock in the lower quarter of the painting. His color palette resembles that of Navajo weavings with the addition of bright turquoise appropriate for the subject. Born in Minneapolis, John Haley studied at the Minneapolis School of Art in the 1920s and later with Hans Hofmann in Munich. Returning to the U. S., he taught art in Minneapolis and then moved in 1930 to California where he became Professor of Art at the University of California at Berkeley for forty-two years. In the 1930s and 40s, he spearheaded the Berkeley school of watercolor painting and was known for his innovative use of opaque watercolors. He began exhibiting with the California Watercolor Society in 1942. However, in the 1950s, his style and subject matter turned from realistic Regionalist to Abstract Expression. This is a transitional painting between Regionalism and his entirely abstract Crystal Series of the early 1950s. Post-war paintings of the Southwest by the artist are scarce.
