About the Item

Attributed to John Nost Sartorius (1759–1828) Fox Hunter and Hounds Oil on canvas, circa 1810 Provenance: Ackermann & Johnson, London A fine and spirited example of early 19th-century English sporting art by the celebrated equestrian painter John Nost Sartorius, this elegant composition captures a mounted huntsman in full scarlet coat, accompanied by his hounds bounding energetically across an autumnal English landscape. Rendered with the distinctive clarity and balance typical of Sartorius’ hand, the work evokes the refinement and pageantry of traditional British country pursuits. The scene is both restrained and dynamic—an intimate moment of calm before the chase, the horse depicted with anatomical precision, the hounds alert and finely modelled. Sartorius, part of a dynasty of painters renowned for their animal and sporting subjects, was highly sought after in his lifetime by aristocratic patrons and was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy. This painting retains an excellent surface and presents beautifully in a gilt-edged frame of appropriate period character. It bears provenance from Ackermann & Johnson, a notable 19th-century London publisher and dealer known for their connection to prominent artists and collectors. Works of this quality and early date by Sartorius are increasingly scarce on the market, especially in such condition and with reputable provenance. Though the painting has impeccable provenance as it is not signed my description should read attributed to. Framed in a hand made English gilt and Walnut frame.
