About the Item

Joseph Thors British, (1835-1920) A Country Track Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 15.5 inches x 23.25 inches Size including frame: 22.75 inches x 30.5 inches Joseph Thors was born in Amsterdam on 25 August, 1835 the son of Samuel Joseph Thors and Jeannette Keijzer. By 1861, he was living in London where he lived in Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury and began earning a living as an artist. He married Hendrina (Harriet) Mendelson in 1862 who was also from Holland and their first son Samuel was born in 1863. Around this time, he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the British Institute and Suffolk Street and in Birmingham between 1869 and 1900. The family continued living in the Bloomsbury area, before moving to 42, Ampthill Square, St Pancras in the early 1870’s. Sometime after 1881, Thors and his wife moved to Islington. This event may have coincided with the immigration of their son Samuel to New York in 1887. He remained in Islington until after 1891, when he moved to the Midlands area and is listed in the local directories of 1892 as living at 3 Oxford Road in the Erdington area of Birmingham. He also exhibited at local Midland galleries and enjoyed considerable popularity and acclaim. By 1901, he had moved back to Islington in London and had become a British Subject. He died at Islington in 1920. Thors is considered at member of the Birmingham School, however, his style is also similar to that of the Norwich school, whose work he admired. Both school’s aims were to achieve naturalistic landscape painting which Thors adopted. His landscapes are mainly of figures, animals and rustic cottages set against a backdrop of trees or woodlands. Thors painted with great care and attention to every detail from the figures on the winding paths to the leaves on the trees, which has helped make his works enduringly popular amongst collectors. Examples of his work can be found in many public collections including the Grundy Art Gallery, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Sandwell Museum, Southampton City Art Gallery, The Wilson, Wednesbury Museum and Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

  • 19th century landscape oil painting of a village tavern
    By John Holland Senior
    Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire
John Holland Snr British, (1830-1886) The Malt Shovel Tavern Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 13 inches x 20.5 inches Size including frame: 18.25 inches x 25.75 inches Provenance: Frost & Reed A wonderful painting of figures sat outside a village inn by John Holland Senior. A wagon is shown delivering supplies as another cart drives off towards a windmill in the distance. In the foreground two people cut a log in half whilst their family looks on. The Malt Shovel Inn was most likely the one at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire. Over 500 years old, it was located on Malt Shovel Lane, and was originally a bakery, becoming an inn sometime during the mid 1700’s. It remained as a pub until its closure in 2016. The windmill in the distance was situated outside Lambourn on the road to Baydon. It was built in 1771 but was demolished around 1887 and is now the site of a farm. John Holland Senior was a painter of landscapes and coastal scenes who was born in Nottingham around 1830. He was the son of a painter and brother to Samuel Holland also a painter and sign writer. He was also uncle to his namesake John Holland (1857-1920) whom he taught to work in charcoal and Samuel S. Holland, both of whom were artists. By 1861, he had become a full time artist exhibiting at Suffolk Street from around this time until 1879, at the British Institution between 1865-1866 as well as exhibiting locally in Nottingham. He never married and lived for many years with his father, brother and his family at Vernon Street, Nottingham. Around 1867, he moved to Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire where he exhibited locally. He would also often travel around the British countryside and coast to paint. He spent a few years in West Yorkshire but by 1871 had moved back to live with his family in Nottingham. However, he spent his final years living at Trebray Lodge, Tintagel, Cornwall where he died on 7 February 1886. A number of his works are held by the Buxton Museum, Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council, Nottingham Art Gallery and the Williamson Art Gallery. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The reverse bears an old label for Frost & Reed. Frost & Reed are a well-known fine Art Gallery, frame maker and fine art publisher founded in Bristol in 1808 by William Hill. The business was bought by John Frost in 1859 who ran it until his death in 1875. His nephew Walter Frost took over the business and in 1881 brought in William Reed...

  • Antique Scottish Highland Loch landscape, with sunlit streaming onto the water
    By Francis E. Jamieson
    Located in Woodbury, CT
Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolor of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolors have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolors are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamiesons's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of oils. Jamieson is known to have traveled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'. - Work by Francis Jamieson can be seen at the usual sites. Please note that on all these sites you will find F. E. Jamieson variously listed as Francis E. Jamieson, F.E.Jamieson, Frank E. Jamieson, Frederick E. Jamieson etc. You may also find some listings under his various pseudonyms of Arnould Pienne, Charles Maurice, Graham Williams...
