Robert Alexander Hillingford British, (1828-1904) The Removal of James I from Mary Queen of Scots Oil on panel, signed Image size: 14 inches x 11.25 inches Size including frame: 21 inches x 18.25 inches Provenance: Thomas Agnew & Sons; Private collection, Melton Mowbray Robert Alexander Hillingford was born in London on 28 January, 1828. In 1841, he moved to Germany to study at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. After 5 years of studying he travelled to Italy visiting Rome, Naples and Florence where he met and married his wife Ciara in 1858. During this time, he produced paintings of Italian life and one of these ‘The Last Evening of the Carnival’ was exhibited at St. Petersburg in 1859. In 1864, he returned with his family to London and began to specialise in historical subjects often including battle scenes. He also produced a number of theatrical scenes and contemporary paintings of the Boer War. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1866 exhibiting there regularly throughout his career. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Arthur Tooth Gallery. From 1871 he lived at 30 Scarsdale Villas, in Kensington and by 1878 had moved to Cornwall Lodge in Rowan Road from where he worked and exhibited from until 1892. Hillingford was known for his close attention to accuracy in details of dress and had a collection of original uniforms. He was Vice President of the Kernoozers Club an organisation for collectors of objets d’art and militaria. He died in Fulham in 1904. This scene depicts the removal of James I from Mary Queen of Scots, one of the best known figures in Scotland’s royal history. Mary Queen of Scots lived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse from 1561 until 1567, occupying the Queen’s apartments on the second floor of the tower. In 1565, she married her second husband Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. After the murder of her private secretary David Rizzio in 1566 by her husband, she fled the palace and went to Edinburgh Castle where her son James I was born on 15 June, 1566. Darnley died in mysterious circumstances on 10 February, 1567 and shortly after, Mary married James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell who was implicated in his murder. This caused widespread condemnation amongst the Scottish nobility who rose up against Mary. On 24 July 1567, she was forced to abdicate in favour of her son James who succeeded to the Scottish throne...

Leonard Baskin, American 1922-2000 Homage to the Un-American Activities Committee Bronze relief sculpture plaque This is not editioned, nor signed or numbered, on the piece but according to the catalog there was 12 or less. A number of these are in museum and university art collections and one of them was exhibited at MoMA NY. This was done to commemorate the communist witch hunts of the Mccarthy era. An important, historic piece. Leonard Baskin (August 15, 1922 – June 3, 2000) was an American sculptor, illustrator, wood-engraver, printmaker, graphic artist, writer and teacher. Baskin was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. While he was a student at Yale University, he founded Gehenna Press, a small private press specializing in fine, small edition, book production. From 1953 until 1974, he taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Subsequently Baskin also taught at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. He lived most of his life in the U.S., but spent nine years in Devon at Lurley Manor, Lurley, near Tiverton, close to his friend Ted Hughes, for whom he illustrated Crow. Sylvia Plath dedicated Sculpto to Leonard Baskin in her famous work, The Colossus and Other Poems (1960). The Funeral Cortege (1997) bronze, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Washington, D.C. His public commissions include a bas relief for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and a bronze statue of a seated figure, erected in 1994 for the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His works are owned by many major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Udinotti Museum of Figurative Art and the Vatican Museums. The archive of his signed work at the Gehenna Press was acquired by the Bodleian Library at Oxford, England, in 2009. The McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton, Ontario owns over 200 of his works (some religious and biblical), most of which were donated by his brother Rabbi Bernard Baskin.
