About the Item

Beautiful contemporary Carmel, California seascape of rocky coastal formations at Point Lobos by Monterey artist Kathleen Murray (American, b. 1958). Signed lower left. Unframed. Image, 9"H x 12"L. Kathleen Murray (American, b. 1958) was born in Los Angeles, California. In the early 1970s, Murray spent three years in Europe studying art and languages at the American School in Switzerland (TASIS) and a year in Italy at St. Michael's School outside Florence. She resides in the Monterey Bay where she is well known for her deeply saturated and textured oil seascapes and landscapes of Carmel, Big Sur, and surrounding Coastal areas. "I met Kathleen Murray in 2013 and right away I decided to support and purchase as many of her paintings as possible. Eight years later and 300 or so paintings purchased; I am happy I decided to invest in this artist. She is a dedicated self taught excellent painter of plein air on the Big Sur coast as you will find. A dedicated artist who has a deep connection to the earth and the sea. Her paintings evoke joy and happiness in all who see them." Robert Azensky Fine Art

His success came in the 1930’s exhibiting at the gallery Durand Ruel, the famous Paris gallery who’s fortune had been made by backing the Impressionists. Fleeing the Nazi’s in 1939 he immigrated to New York city exhibiting at the Corcoram Gallery in Washington DC. His success was instantaneous and became a highly sought after artist. Our painting is a very beautiful example of this oeuvre during that period. We also have a second work by him from the same period in our other listings. After the war, he returned to France and passed away there in 1955. His works can be found in several museums including the Princeton art...

Guy C. Wiggins (1883 - 1962) Locomotive Train in Snowstorm, 1957 Oil on paperboard 8 x 10 inches Signed lower left; signed and dated on the reverse Guy Carleton Wiggins is best known for his impressionistic snow scenes of New York in 1920's. Wiggins lived in Old Lyme and Essex where he operated an art school. The Connecticut country-side was conducive to his impressionist technique of plein-air painting and broken brushwork.  Ironically, although his work includes many fine Connecticut landscapes, he is best remembered for some snow scenes of New York City. Like many other American Impressionists, Wiggins had one foot in the city and the other in the country (Vermont Hillside, South Londonderry).  Wiggins was born in Brooklyn, New York, went to England with his family as a boy, received an English grammar school education, and traveled widely abroad. He was the son of a prominent artist, Carleton Wiggins, a painter in the Barbizon style who studied with George Inness and admired Anton Mauve and Dwight Tryon...
