- British 20th Century oil painting of The palace at Fontainebleau, paris, FranceBy Walter TaylorLocated in Petworth, West SussexA striking and simply composed painting of The Palace at Fontainebleau by Walter Taylor. Walter Taylor (British, 1860-1943) The palace at Fontainebleau Oil on canvas Signed `Walter Taylor’ (lower right) 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.3 cm.) Born in Leeds, this artist was trained as an architect but eventually found his calling in painting town scenes, landscapes, and interiors using both oil and watercolour. With a privileged upbringing thanks to his tobacco manufacturer father, he attended art school in Paris before studying under Fred Brown at the Royal College of Art. In 1899, he married Hylda Matheson, but their honeymoon ended in tragedy with her untimely death. He eventually settled in Bedford Square, Brighton, during the 1910s and 1920s, but maintained a studio at 18 Fitzroy Street in London from 1915 onwards. A prominent figure in the art world, he was a founder member and secretary of the Camden Town Group, a member of the New English Art Club, and one of the founding members of the London Group in 1913. He exhibited with the London Group until 1934, showcasing his work that often drew inspiration from his travels in Europe, which sometimes included the company of fellow artist Walter Sickert. Additionally, he painted extensively in London, Brighton, and Hove. This artist also had a keen eye for collecting works by other artists, amassing an important collection that included pieces by Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard, Dufy, Gilman, Matthew Smith...Category

- Jean-Baptiste Olive, French Post-Impressionist summer seascape oil paintingBy Jean-Baptiste OliveLocated in Petworth, West SussexJean Baptiste Olive (French, 1848 - 1936) A figure on the beach Oil on canvas Signed 'B. Olive' lower right Measurements in frame: 19 x 22.75 in. This stunning impressionist painting by Jean Baptiste Olive highlights the mediterranean light bleaching the white sands and the azure sea or the South of France. The little figure is captured as a dab of colour against the coastal rock jutting out or the sand. The light blue of the sky is cleverly reflected in the blue / grey shadows of the cliffs and rocks juxtaposing the yellows, reds and whites of the sand and clouds. This painting gets only better and better close up as the impressionist palette and composition comes alive to the eye. We cannot commend this painting and this artist more highly and we are always on the hunt for more of Olive's works. The son of a wine merchant born in Marseille, Olive was encouraged to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the same town under the guidance of Joanny Rave. After achieving first prize in 1871 as a student for live model drawing he painted many scenes of Marseilles and the surrounding sea shore. He took on many commissions particularly in Paris to decorate frescoes notably Cirque d'Hiver and Basilica of the Sacre Coeur. He exhibited repeatedly at the salon. Today 2 paintings created for the golden room at Le Train Bleu...Category

As a small child, Thibesart’s family moved to a suburb of Paris where the very young artist found a wealth of teachers and inspiration to pull from. Thibesart showed such proclivity for drawing at an early age, and had enough talent that famed impressionist Emile Boggio began giving him lessons when he was just 11 years old. Eventually, Thibesart began formal training at the Lycee Rollin in Paris, followed by studies at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian. While working in Symbolism, Thibesart became a student of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art movements of his native France and began winning numerous medals in France, including the gold medal from the Societe des Artistes Francais in 1897. Thibesart then began his studies with the famed Impressionist Henri Martin for much of his early life. From Martin, he learned the technique of “plein air" painting who as a master of the discipline. Proficiency of this technique and its aesthetic, freed up the young artist, allowing him the ability to create amazingly beautiful light and shadow splayed across his trademark subjects which frequently included the landscapes of Italy...Category
