Moses Strikes the Water from the Rock. XVII cent. Dutch school.
Located in Firenze, IT
Moses Strikes Water from the Rock Dutch school, XVII century. Workshop of Jacob de Wet (Haarlem, 1610-1675). Technique: Oil on oak wood panel, composed of 3 horizontal panels. In this evocative work, Moses stands in a cave, gathering the Israelites. There was no water to drink or for their cattle. The people were discontented in the desert. But Moses and Aaron listened to the voice of God. With Aaron’s staff, Moses struck the rock, and water gushed forth abundantly, quenching their thirst. Jacob de Wet’s workshop specializes in subjects from the Old and New Testaments. The recognizable rectangular format, simple compositions, and clear narratives define his style. The interplay of light and shadow, reminiscent of Rembrandt, adds timeless allure. The characters’ costumes, with their large hats and turbans...

Dutch School, 17th Century, Shipping in a Stiff Breeze, a City Beyond
Located in Stockholm, SE
We are delighted to present a significant piece from the Dutch School, most likely dating back to the late 17th century. This captivating painting showcases the dynamic force of nature with three ships vigorously navigating through stormy waters. The foreground is a scene of nautical struggle, as figures are depicted working intensely with the sails, steering, and bracing against the tumultuous sea. In the serene background, the silhouette of a quaint town emerges, with spires from churches and the outlines of various buildings is visible. This juxtaposition of the calm town against the chaotic foreground serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictability of life and nature. Dominating the canvas, the sky occupies two-thirds of the painting, filled with brooding clouds that occasionally break to reveal patches of blue. The presence of birds adds a dynamic element to the otherwise ominous atmosphere. While the artist remains unknown, the work is quintessentially Dutch in its execution, with meticulous attention to detail and a profound understanding of maritime life. The painting's oval shape is quite distinctive and is complemented by a suitably antique octagonal black frame, which adds to its historical charm. This piece is a testament to the mastery of Dutch maritime painting...

Dutch Fishing Vessels in Storm /// Francis Swaine Maritime Seascape Antique Ship
By Francis Swaine
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
Artist: Francis Swaine (English, 1725-1782) Title: "Dutch Fishing Vessels in Storm" *No signature found Circa: 1770 Medium: Original Oil Painting on wood panel Framing: Framed in a Louis XV style gold moulding Framed size: 10.63" x 12.63" Panel size (irregular margins): 6" x 7.75" Condition: One small restored spot upper left. Cosmetic wear to frame. In otherwise very good condition Notes: Provenance: private collection - London, England; acquired from art dealer Ernest Alden, London, England retaining his original gallery label on verso. Metal plaque inscribed "F. Swaine 1740-1782", (active dates), attached to frame bottom center. Ernest William Alden (1866-1947) was recorded in successive censuses, in 1881 as a picture mounter (card maker), age 14, living at 9 Bloomsbury St, with several other members of his family also given as picture mounters, including his father, James; in 1891 as a picture frame mounter with his father and family at 208 Shaftesbury Avenue; in 1901 as a photographer and picture dealer at 39 King’s Road, Chelsea; and in 1911 again at 39 King’s Road but the census form is damaged. His listing in trade directories, initially as picture mount cutter, changed to picture framemaker from 1904, soon after he set up in the King’s Road. He advertised his large stock of second-hand swept and other frames, claiming to have been established in 1893 (The Year’s Art 1913). Alden died in Chelsea in 1947, leaving effects worth £5,011, with probate granted to his widow Lily Alden and to Marjorie Frances Alden. Two of his younger brothers, Henry Cyril Alden (1871-1939) and James Preston Alden (1876-1960), were also active as picture framemakers. - National Portrait Gallery, London, England. Biography: Francis Swaine (1725–1782) was a British marine painter. He was born in 1725, and christened on 7 October of that year at St Dunstan's, Stepney, London. His parents were named Francis Swaine and Ann Joel. In 1735 the elder Francis Swaine, the marine painter's father, applied in writing to the Commissioners of His Majesty's Navy for employment as a Navy Messenger, in succession to Mr William Wyatt. He mentions that he had served "upwards of twenty eight years" in the Navy, and that his father had died Purser of the Royal Katherine. He mentions also that he had carried out "little labours in drawing", and that he at that time had five small children. The first-born of these children was the Francis Swaine who became the marine painter. The elder Swaine was duly employed as a Navy Messenger. He served for 20 years and died on 10 October 1755, aged 64. Swaine is said to have been influenced by the style of Van de Velde. There is no clear evidence of this alleged influence. The suggestion that Swaine may have been a pupil of Charles Brooking...

Antique English 19th century marine scene
Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding English late 18th / early 19th century marine scene by one of Britain's best known and sought after painters. William (or Wiliam) Anderson (1757 – 27 May 1837) was a Scottish artist specializing in maritime and patriotic themes. He was well-regarded for his detailed and accurate portraits of ships under sail, exhibiting his works annually in London between 1787 and 1811 and then occasionally until 1834. Anderson influenced other artists, notably John Ward and others of the Hull school. Anderson's early life is obscure, but he is known to have trained as a shipwright before moving to London to become a maritime painter when he was about 30. His training served him well as a painter, providing "a practical nautical knowledge" of his subjects. He earned a reputation for "accuracy and refinement of detail" and was admired for his bright, clear colours. He worked in both oils and watercolours. He based his style on that of well-known Dutch maritime...

GOUACHE NAPLES MARINE - Italian landscape gouache
Located in Napoli, IT
Gouache Nealopitane Marine, Italy, 2011, cm.22x33. Lacquered wooden frame. Delicious gouache made in 2011 by an unknown artist, using the method of the ancient masters of the landscape. Gouache paint is a non-permanent, water-based, opaque and opaque paint made opaque with the addition of a chalky white pigment. Invented in Europe in 500, it was initially used to carry out preliminary sketches of large oil works. It is characterized by a great ease of drafting and a lively color rendering, but it requires great skill, certainty in drawing and an extreme speed of execution, as it dries quickly and cannot be retouched. Precisely these characteristics give a particular liveliness and freshness to the works, characterized by light and opaque tones, very different from the glossy compactness of egg tempera and the transparency of the oil. Widely used in canvas paintings and miniatures. The technique was often used by landscape painters, such as Xavier Della Gatta, Pietro Fabris, Alessandro d'Anna...

Shepherd with Sheep, Cows and a Goat in a Landscape by Jan Frans Soolmaker
Located in Stockholm, SE
This painting depicts a pastoral scene that is attributed to the artist Jan Frans Soolmaker, an artist known for his Italianate landscapes and scenes that often feature equestrian and Arcadian elements. The painting is not signed but is attributed to Soolmaker, relating it to a known signed work by the artist that was sold at Sotheby’s London in 1999. The scene is suffused with the warm glow of a setting or rising sun, casting a soft light that is characteristic of Soolmaker’s landscapes. It shows a shepherd guiding a group of cattle across a shallow stream, with the animals taking center stage in the composition. The animals are rendered with careful attention to their forms and the play of light on their bodies, which is a hallmark of Soolmaker's work. The landscape is composed of a rocky terrain with trees and shrubbery, creating a sense of depth and natural beauty that invites the viewer to explore the scene further. The background suggests a vast, open landscape with distant mountains, which adds to the Italianate feel of the painting. The sky is dramatic, with clouds catching the light of the sun, contributing to the overall serene yet dynamic atmosphere of the work. The provenance of the painting is notable, having been in the possession of significant historical figures such as Swedish Prince Fredrik Adolf, and later The collection of Pär Ulmgren, The collection of Gösta Stenman, and Engineer and politician Gustaf Henry Hansson. Potential buyers have the option of choosing between a newly made gold frame or an older brown frame, which allows for personalization in how the work is presented. Soolmaker’s work is often compared to that of Dutch painter Nicolaes Berchem, whose style he emulated. Soolmaker's landscapes reflect a similar sensitivity to light and composition, making his works sought after for their beauty and historical significance. Despite the smaller body of work left by Soolmaker, due to his short career, his paintings are valued for their craftsmanship and the legacy of the artist’s brief but impactful contribution to the Dutch Italianate landscape genre. Information: Jan Frans Soolmaker (Flanders 1635‑1685) Shepherd with Sheep...

Winter Landscape, Figures on Frozen Canal, Signed & Dated 1660, Thomas Heeremans
Located in London, GB
The painting depicts a lively scene from a frozen river outside the town walls, where a large crowd have gathered to skate and mingle. North-Western Europe went through a small ice age from circa 1550 until the middle of the 19th century, where two thirds of the winters in Holland between 1600 and 1700 were particularly cold with long periods of frost and snow. Fifty five percent of Holland is under sea level and as such reclaiming land was/is a constant battle. There are numerous rivers and canals and when they froze they were a popular place for all social levels to ice skate, ride a sledge, or play kolf (the popular forerunner of ice hockey). Water was supplied by a makeshift well cut into the ice, as seen in our painting, merchants would set up shops, people could eat and drink in a typically Dutch “koek-en-zopie” tent where “zopie” was served, a popular drink made of “bock”, a strong German lager mixed with rum. The gathering, as seen in the painting, was a common type in the Low Countries during the seventeenth century and as such many artists were inspired to capture the rich range of images provided by them. The scene depicted is relatively restrained compared with some, if you consider Pieter Bruegel I's paintings of this type. Many individuals depicted stand out for their elegance. As usual, however, the more elegant and wealthy figures are shown mingling with the less wealthy, suggesting that these events, temporarily, brought even the most divided of societies together and helped to ease the everyday social tensions between the different social strata. Signed with monogram and dated 'THM 1660' and inscribed on a presentation plaque on the frame. Thomas Heeremans specialised in summer and winter landscapes with numerous figures enjoying themselves. He also painted a few beach scenes set into the dunes. He was born in Haarlem, the son of Hereman Thomasz. and Gooltje Maertensdr. On 4 December 1663 he married Trijntje Claesdr. who was from Leiden and the couple had five children between 1664 and 1673. After Trijntje’s death (buried 26 Sept 1680) he married Sibilla Juriaensdr., who was from the county of Marck in Germany, with whom he had a son, Gijsbert. Tomas was a pupil of the classicising history and portrait painter Cesar Boetius van Everdingen, who was active in Haarlem between 1648 and 1658. Van Everdingen seems to have had very little impact on Heeremans, who became strongly influenced by the work of the slightly earlier Haarlem painter Klaes Molenaer (Haarlem before 1630 – 1676 Haarlem). He became a member of the Painter's Guild of Saint Luke in his native Haarlem, which is where he seemed to have been active his entire career. His work is held in many renowned museums including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, State Museums in Berlin, Old Masters...
