About

Frame size 97x124 cm. Matías Palau Ferré (1921-2000) was a painter, sculptor and ceramist born in Montblanch, province of Tarragona, Autonomous Community of Catalonia, Spain. He is known as the painter who burned his paintings. He studied at the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of San Jorge, Barcelona and moved to Paris in 1957 where he was one of the disciples of Pablo Picasso. Palau Ferré Art Museum of Montblanc He started with some works of cubist inspiration in canvases in oil. Over the years he also made ceramics and sculptures. After reaching fame in Spain he made exhibitions in several foreign countries, including France, the United Kingdom and the USA. UU .. His most important works are Woman and Moon, Montblanch and Guer-Blanc. Palau Ferré reached notoriety due to his sudden mood swings that led him to burn his oil canvases in 1974 after a quarrel with a gallerist. In protest against what he defined as "prostitution of art," he continued to systematically burn all his oil paintings that were put at his disposal during a period of about twenty years. Normally he scattered the ashes of his paintings ceremonially in the Francolí river of his native land, but some of the ashes of his canvases were saved and they became part of an artistic exhibition in Pennsylvania, USA. UU.1 His prolonged protest led him to stop painting canvases in oil and to prohibit the few who survived from being exposed until 1989. In his last artistic phase he painted only in Chinese ink on thick paper following a technique of his own invention. He always signed his works with his two surnames "Palau Ferré". Palau Ferré died on January 1, 2000 in Montblanch and the town hall of that town put his name on a street that same year. Months later the Palau Ferré Art Museum was inaugurated in which some of his works are exhibited, including some rare canvases that were saved from burning
