About the Item
The whaling ship, Essex, taking on provisions from shore before setting sail once more. Small boats can be seen alongside her piloted by crewmembers going ashore. Smoke can be seen billowing out of her tryworks where the whale blubber is rendered.
The Essex is arguably the most famous Nantucket whaling ship in history. The Essex was a successul whaler during her carreer, but it was her unfortunate destruction by a sperm whale—and the unspeakable horrors that befell her crew afterward—that served as the inspiration for the first Great American Novel, Moby-Dick; or, The Whale.
