Signed: Pierre-Edmond Péradon (1893-1981) was born on August 3, 1893, in Courseulles-sur-Mer (Calvados, Normandy) into a wealthy bourgeois family. His father was a high-ranking civil servant and his mother came from a prosperous family of mill owners.
Originally, art was not his chosen path. In 1912, while living in Nevers, Péradon began studying law. However, his first true passion was poetry. He contributed to the regional literary review Ombres et Formes, publishing his first collection, Premiers Poèmes, in 1913. Through this literary circle, he met the painter and printmaker Fernand Chalandre. Frequent visits to Chalandre’s studio completely changed Péradon's trajectory; he abandoned his law studies in Grenoble to devote his life entirely to painting.
Because his family possessed significant financial means, Péradon never had the professional pressure to sell his work to survive. This allowed him an extraordinary level of artistic freedom. He split his time between writing poetry, socializing within the Parisian art scene, and traveling extensively across France to paint landscapes. He exhibited in major Parisian salons and held notable exhibitions at the Galerie Gerbe in Paris in 1925 and 1930.
In the 1930s, he maintained a studio in Paris, capturing its historic streets, but eventually returned to live in the large family home in Courseulles-sur-Mer.
One of the most remarkable chapters of Péradon’s life occurred in June 1944. As a resident of Courseulles-sur-Mer—which sat directly on Juno Beach—he was a first-hand witness to the Allied D-Day landings. Defying strict military prohibitions, Péradon hid himself in the coastal sand dunes to sketch and paint the monumental naval and infantry operations in watercolor. His covert artistic activity actually caused him to be detained under suspicion of being a spy. To prove his innocence, he marched the Allied officers to his home studio. Realizing he was simply a dedicated artist capturing history, the British and American officers released him—though they reportedly left with a few of his fresh watercolors and oils as souvenirs!
The aftermath of World War II brought financial hardships to the family, forcing Péradon to take a job as an accountant for the local oyster farms in Courseulles-sur-Mer. Despite the shift in circumstances and a series of deeply painful personal tragedies in his later years (including the loss of his wife to cancer, and the premature deaths of his son and grandson), he never stopped painting or writing poetry. He passed away in Caen on July 4, 1981.
Péradon’s oeuvre is highly poetic, atmospheric, and deeply tied to the natural world—particularly the changing light of the Normandy coast, the Bocage, and the valleys of Suisse Normande.
Structurally, his compositions owe a great debt to Paul Cézanne. Péradon frequently used earth tones, muted greens, and soft blues, focusing on a simplification of form and undulating lines to guide the viewer through a landscape.
His oil technique is highly distinct. He applied very thin, diluted layers of oil paint in flat, smooth brushstrokes. By minimizing visible texture or heavy impasto, he created a luminous, veil-like pictorial surface that gives his landscapes a dreamy, atmospheric, and highly cohesive quality.
His watercolors and gouaches are similarly celebrated for their fluid spontaneity, especially his wartime sketches and winter village scenes.
Today, his estate is vast—spanning over a thousand cataloged works including oils, watercolors, and drawings—and he remains a cherished master of 20th-century Norman regional landscapes and post-impressionist poetry.
