About the Item

"Cerro El Pital" by El Salvadoran artist Raul Elias Reyes is an original etching and watercolor on paper representing the El Pital, one of the highest mountain peaks in the Sierra Madre range. Raul Elias Reyes was born in San Salvador in 1918 and is became one of the most prominent painters in El Salvador. As a young man he enrolled in an illustration drawing course taught by correspondence from the United States. In 1937, at the age of 19, he participated in a contest where he won, along with Julia Díaz, Noé Canjura, Mario Araujo Rajo and Antonio Pineda Coto, a scholarship to continue their studies at the Academy with Valero Lecha. Elas Reyes, Canjura and Díaz since then shared a deep friendship. He moved to the Gulf of Fonseca, which became his workplace. On his return he left for Mexico to study together with Noé Canjura. Later, he and other artists received scholarships from the Government of El Salvador to study in Paris. His favorite subjects were nature and fishermen, but in his work they can be found from summer landscapes to humid forests, day and night, the town and the city. Jorge Cornejo commented that "The constant study of the figure, in the academy, has left a deep impulse to achieve a strong human expression. Something very personal leads him to conceive man integrated into the landscape, as part of nature, from which he can not detach himself; That is why when he paints the human figure he is rooted in his vital environment. He sees man as a tree, that's why the trees of his forests also look like men. " He was professor in the Department of Visual Arts of the University of Fine Arts and professor of Pre-Columbian Art and Colonial Art of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the National University. Among the awards given to Elas Reyes are the medal of artistic merit of the General Union of Authors and Artists of El Salvador -UGAASAL- (1984) and the Knight award of the Order of Arts and Letters of the Ministry of Culture of France. (1990).
