A truly captivating/stunning early 20th century French coastal landscape by Raymond Wintz (French 1884–1956), renowned for his luminous depictions of Brittany and the French coastline. A barely readable signature is present in the lower right hand corner (see photo).
This work features a rugged, rocky shoreline leading out toward quiet, turquoise waters beneath a soft sky, with classic stone cottages nestled on the headland in the background. The composition highlights Wintz's mastery of coastal light, contrasting deep, earthy ochres and moss greens in the foreground against cool blues and soft horizon hues. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting is presented in a substantial carved wood frame with a linen liner.

Raimond Joseph Wintz (commonly known as Raymond Wintz) was born in Paris on March 25, 1884, into an artistic family. He received classical artistic training in Paris, studying at the prestigious École des Arts Décoratifs and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Under the tutelage of prominent artists such as Jules Adler and Gabriel Ferrier at the École Française, Wintz developed a disciplined foundation in landscape painting and composition.
Artistic Career & Salon Recognition
Wintz made his public debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1010 and exhibited there regularly throughout his career. His work rapidly gained critical acclaim, earning him prestigious awards including the Silver Medal (1922) and the Gold Medal along with the Corot Prize (1924). He was eventually named a Knight of the Legion of Honor (Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur) and served as President of the Society of French Landscape Artists as well as President of the Jury of the Salon. From 1934 to 1939, he also taught as a professor at the Académie Julian in Paris.
Style & Subject Matter
Broadly classified within the tradition of French Realism with Post-Impressionist influences, Wintz is most famous for his luminous, atmospheric depictions of the northern French coastline.
The Coastal Light of Brittany: Wintz spent considerable time painting along the coast of Brittany (including locations such as Camaret, Doëlan, and the Finistère region). Captivated by the unique maritime light, he produced scenes of rugged shorelines, quiet harbors, fishing boats, and traditional stone cottages nestled against coastal hillsides.
Interior Views: He is also celebrated for his "open window" compositions—typically featuring a room or balcony framing a clear, sunlit view of a harbor, often accented with potted hydrangeas or geraniums on the sill. His famous work, The Blue Door (Un coin du port à Doëlan), became an iconic image that was widely reproduced in international prints and posters.
Legacy
Raymond Wintz passed away in Paris on March 18, 1956, and was buried at the Montparnasse Cemetery. His works are held in public institutions—including the Petit-Palais in Paris, as well as museums in Reims, Montreal, Montevideo, and Glasgow—and remain highly sought after by collectors of mid-century French coastal art.
