Rodger Schultz
Japanese Garden No. 4

About

Tracking the breadth of D.C. native artist Rodger Schultz’s output is an incredibly complex task. Schultz draws literal inspiration from a staggering array of artistic movements, simultaneously creating Rhythmic Impressionist landscapes with Pop Art collages and suggestive anthropomorphic sculptures. While Schultz has said that the core of his art draws from post-Impressionism, he has also held an apprenticeship with Arizona sculptor Ed Beathitt and spent over a decade in Graphic Design working with cutting edge visual technology. Schultz is perpetually experimenting, embracing mistakes, discovering new styles and giving those styles, mistakes and experiments room to breath and bleed into one another. Circumscribing his work into one easily digestible idea would not only be impossible but would not be true to his process. However, Rodger Schultz’s output is also remarkably simple in many ways. All of his work stems from a deep intrinsic urge to express himself truthfully. To Schultz, his vocation as an artist transcends all other material considerations and is rooted in a deep compassion. His artistic process is a deeply reflective one. Having spent years working for major corporations, Schultz understands the difficulty of communicating an authentic and sincere spiritualism in a society where irony and deep cynicism is critically engrained. Schultz responds to an increasingly insular and exclusive art market by his subversive approach to placing a ‘value’ on his works. For example, in his work ‘Platters’ which are a series of numbered canvases which range in price from $1 to $10,000 corresponding to the number desired on the canvas by the patron. With each number being used only once, the process is a long form social and economic experiment. At Artist’s Proof we have curated a selection of Schultz’s best Impressionist works. These intricate, verdant landscapes explode in a kaleidoscope of flora and color. Through a multitude of simple brushstrokes, Schultz has constructed an inner world that pulsates with silent harmony.
