At first glance the subject matter may come across as abstract shapes until the viewer sees that the darker central shape is trees growing down the side of a valley pass between a snowy hillside in the foreground and snow-covered peaks in the background. The top third of the painting is a deep rich blue occasionally interspersed with tiny pinpoints of starlight. On the righthand side of the composition there is the hint of a glow of light from what may be a town, ski area or headlights of a car, hidden just out of view beyond the snowy Loveland Pass...
