Beautiful ca. 1935 painting by American artist, Frank Stanley Herring (1894-1966). Watercolor on heavy rag handmade paper measures 14.5 x 19 inches, 23 x 28 inches in original vintage oak frame. Signed lower right. Titled on back side of paper. . Birth place: Pen Argyl, PA Addresses: NYC/Milledgeville, GA Profession: Portrait painter Studied: C. Hawthorne; G. Bridgman; Bartlett; G. Tyler; Forsburg; Grell; Stickroth; Paul. Exhibited: AIC, 1937, 1941. Work: Smithsonian American Art Museum; Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville; High Mus. Art, Atlanta; Mecklenburg Court House, Charlotte, NC Comments: Teaching: Grand Central Sch. Art. In 1946 Frank Herring and his wife, Francis Herring, established the Burnsville Painting Classes (also Known as SeeCelo) in conjunction with another artist, Edward Shorter. Located in the old Mount Mitchell's Boys camp in Burnsville, N.C., the school grew to national recognition over a 20 year period, continuing until 1966. At that time with the blessings of the Herrings, the school was transitioned over to artists Everett Kivette and John Bryans who carried on the tradition. The school is still in existence.
