Shoko Okumura
"Sensitivity to Ephemeral II" landscape pigments silver leaf on paper sky clouds

2020

About the Item

Shoko Okumura paints with the classic Japanese technique - she prepares the paper with silver leaf, then paints on top with mineral pigments. For this application, the silver leaf overlaps and creates the tile pattern on the painting. This kind of antique screen texture is admired a lot in Japan because people understand it is delicate silver leaf lamination (requires lots of skill and patience) instead of just silver color painting. The twilight glow in the sky and the changes of clouds, all these are impermanent things. In the same sky, you will find the stars and the moon which are eternal existence during our short life span. Through this series Shoko wants to contemplate the contrast between the impermanence and perpetuity. The four sides behind the painting one can always see shade of a pink halo, which represents the presence of the sun with its warm ray, and the sun always illuminates us, it's the essence of our life. This work is framed in Italy, artwork size is 45 x 45cm, framed size is 57x57cm. BIOGRAPHY - SHOKO OKUMURA Born in Japan in 1983, currently Shoko Okumura lives and works in Milan Italy. Recipient of a distinguished government scholarship, in 2008 Shoko graduated with a BFA in Traditional Japanese Painting at Tokyo University of Arts. She then moved to Florence Italy to study the art of fresco restorations. This newfound understanding of fresco techniques and colors led to experimenting and applying Italian pigments to Japanese painting techniques, which often utilize metal supports such as gold or silver leaf. This style of painting is more demanding than what appears at first glance. An intent gazer must mesh palpable first impressions with subtle hints and allusions, thereby expanding one’s extrinsic perceptive vision, the image within the frame, to the inner self – of both artist and observer – to which the image truly appeals. Shoko is inspirited to paint works that represent the relationship between human beings and nature. She is deeply intrigued by seasons passing, colors waning and sounds of nature merging towards a renewed harmony, all these have always, across all cultures, been a source both of art inspiration through its myriad of expressions and of deep emotions for souls open to the world’s wonders.

  • "White Crow" Japanese landscape painting mineral pigments on silk nature bird
    By Maki Kuchida
    Located in Kowloon, Hong Kong
White Crow is a 2020 landscape work with a protagonist bird, the white crow by Maki Kuchida. This work demonstrates Maki's delicate painting skills with a lot of details in one work. She applied aluminum leaf on this work to create a perspective in the background. Maki combines the Japanese landscape painting technique with the Chinese one thus her landscape work is unique in its own way. White Crow is the bird of fortune and peace in the Japanese culture. On the bottom right, shadows of another mascot, coyote, can be seen. Coyote is one of Maki's favorite icons which can be found in many of her landscape paintings. The painted size of the work is approx. 27 x 18cm, while the framed size is approx. 47x38cm. It is framed with archival grade mount. There will be a certificate of authenticity issued with your acquisition. Maki's paintings may seem deceptively simple at first but indeed the colors and texture are achieved through a labor-intensive and time-consuming process as painting on silk for one color requires at least 8 layers of pigments. Maki paints using mineral pigments on silk...

  • Golden City - 24k Gold and Mineral, Cityscape, Luxurious, Big Painting, Gemstone
    By Maria Mitsumori
    Located in Tokyo, JP
This large painting is Mitsumori's very first maiden work. An original mineral painting, made with 24k gold, crushed minerals (natural and synthetic), oyster shells and gold-coated mica on Japanese paper mounted on a wood panel. Natural colors include precious and semi-precious stones. Because these substances consist of unique chemical and physical properties, every artwork has unique characteristics and a story to tell, with a sense of connection to the earth. It is highly textured with a matt and rich sand-like appearance. What originally inspired her to paint was the cityscapes of Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer is a city in India known as the “golden city” that gleams in gold-like colors at sunset. The city shimmered like a piece of gold jewelry, reminding her of jewelry that retains its shine even after a thousand years. She felt a strong desire to capture them in paintings and set out to do so. Presents the sceneries seen through her eyes in an art form. In mint condition, Certificate of Authenticity included and calligraphy seal in front, hand-signed at the back. Sold unframed and ready to hang (eye bolt and string mounted at the back). Artist: Maria Mitsumori...
