A. Solomon
English oil Impressionist landscape with sheep in a field. Early 20th century

1910

About the Item

English Impressionist landscape with sheep in a field by a Victorian house with a blustery sky. Solomon was an early 20th-century painter of landscape and town scenes from the first part of the 20th century. Solomon was a classic English Impressionist with his use of color with light and dark bringing depth and atmosphere to his pieces. He also painted scenes of France, especially Paris and this example came from a collection of French and English oil studies. The style of the painting is typical of the English early 20th century Impressionists. Many painters had gone to France to see the 'New " way of painting that had been made so famous by Claude Monet's 'Impressionist Sunrise' painting. Whilst in Paris many painters saw the various different Impressionist studios and became interested in painting in a similar way. Solomon, I'm sure was one of those painters..! His English works show the signs of the French Impressionist style. This is one of his English compositions. It shows a rural setting with sheep grazing and a house beyond. He has achieved a very good, well-balanced scene, with an interesting sky and color coordination. This piece would be suited for almost any room in a house, either a bedroom, study, family room, entrance, or even kitchen. The compatible colors for the painting are beige, brown, blue, green, white and off white and many others

Born in Scone, Frazer would participate in the growth and development of Scottish landscape painting during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Indeed, Frazer would attend the acclaimed Royal Scottish Academy to receive his art education, intended to compete with English schools such as the Royal Academy in London. Edinburgh was and remains, the art capital of Scotland, and there was no place better for budding artist to plant their roots. Frazer’s work is a prime example of the growing influence of impressionism on Scottish landscape art...
