Oil on Panel 2015 Signed on front and back by the artist Unframed This is an original work of art by Boston-based, mid-career artist Teri Malo. Malo's work features coastal scenes, meandering marshes, and energy-filled seascapes. Depicting some of her favorite places on earth, Malo’s paintings portray moments she has spent alone in nature considering, as she puts it: “the spirit of place.” Malo lovingly renders portraits of quiet estuaries, rocky coastlines, waves crashing against rough-hewn cliffs, and quietly hypnotic waves at high tide. Her chosen locales include the North Shore of Massachusetts; Lubec, Maine, and Outer Cape Cod. Malo shares the reverence she holds for her subjects writing: “While on first sight the subject may seem realistic, closer inspection reveals surprises. Each small part of the painting becomes an abstract painting on its own, with complex gestures and layered textures.” Malo’s desire to make each work intricate and multi-dimensional alludes to the fact that these surroundings are complex and ever-changing. The rhythms of tides, times of day, and weather patterns evident in Malo’s work are individual, yet necessarily interconnected. The scenes are metaphors for our own existence. “What do I want the viewer to take away from my paintings?” Malo asks. “The opportunity and need to slow down and observe closely, to enjoy being here now, and to sense that there are millions of exquisite moments near at hand. We are small parts of something both larger and smaller.” Teri Malo was raised in New England; she has lived and worked in Boston for 30 years. She has exhibited extensively in New England and on the East Coast since 1980. Her works have been shown and collected by a number of New England museums including the Danforth Museum, Framingham, MA; DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA; Rose Art Museum, Waltham, MA; Newport Art Museum, Newport, RI. New Coastal Scenes is Malo’s eighth solo exhibition with Arden Gallery.
