About the Item

Randall Exon paints fusions of what he sees and what he imagines, creating imagery that is identifiable and yet somehow other-worldly. He draws inspiration from the farmlands along the Brandywine River where he now lives, as well as from the vast planes of the Midwest where he grew up as a boy, and from the coastlines of County Mayo, Ireland, where he spends his summers. Each of these places informs his unique point of view, and he melds them into almost mythical settings, infused with a magical realism that is poetic and haunting. Inspired by such master painters as Corot and Vermeer, Exon makes light a guiding force in his work. Whether conveying the effect of sunlight streaming through a heavy sky, of a dark room illuminated by a single lamp, or of moonlight bouncing off the iridescent surface of an idle canoe, the artist succeeds in infusing his works with a unique atmosphere and mood. Born in Vermillion, South Dakota, Exon earned his BFA in painting from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, and an MFA at the University of Iowa. In 2003 the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania staged a solo exhibition of his work. He was awarded the Thomas Benedict Clarke Prize in the 2004 179th Annual Invitation Exhibition of Contemporary American Art at the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts, New York. More recently, Exon’s work was featured in Visions of the Susquehanna, a traveling exhibition organized by the Lancaster Museum of Art, Pennsylvania, in 2008, and Haunting Narratives, a major exhibition at the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, in 2012.
