Cabin in the Forest, Landscape with Trees

late 20th Century

About the Item

Serene depiction of a cabin in the forest attributed to "Tomio" (Tomio Teraura) (American, 1921-2007). The cabin is viewed from behind a fence through an area of dense trees in an almost hidden spot of dappled sunlight, that illuminates a glimpse of the structure. The artist uses a unique point of view and masterful perspective to depict this beautiful scene. Signed "Tomio" in the lower right corner. Stamp on verso indicates the canvas is of Japanese origin ("Canvas Funaoka"). No frame. Canvas size: 19.75"H x 24"W. We have found another painting signed Tomio of the USS WILTSIE DD 716 DESTROYER also by the artist Tomio. Our research has shown the artist Tomio is most likely Tomio Teraura a Vacaville, California resident; and WWII Veteran who served as an interpreter in the US Army in WWII. Prior to enlisting in 1944 we found he was a model builder of Identification Models of Warships (1943) at Gila River Internment Camp. Many of his models are in private collections and museum collections. He was interred at Gila River Internment camp from 1941-1944.

The practice of “Plein Air Painting” goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir who were advocating of plein air painting. Much of their work was done outdoors in the diffuse light of a large white umbrella. Another major proponent of Plein Air was Jean Baptiste Camille Corot whom Claude Monet considered as “The only One Master here”. Corot provides a transition from the sharp academic style that ruled in his day with focus on the natural world and the lyrical expressiveness of one's work. With her "Plein Air Paintings", Jane Chapin is part of one of the largest art movements in history. Her paintings carry human emotions. We can read her moods and feelings with places that carry deep remembrances for the artist that go beyond the descriptive.
