About the Item

This amazing landscape painting of Telluride, Colorado is a bold and vivid work of contemporary art. The large-scale digital painting, dye-sublimated onto aluminum by Coloradan artist Topher Straus, uses an original approach to depicting iconic destinations. The rich palette is intensified by light reflecting through the sublimated dye and unique high-gloss finish, and the elegant simplicity of frameless construction enhances its sophistication. The painting measures 30” x 60”. He takes the viewer into a fresh artistic experience by working on such a grand scale. Inspired by his time spent in this beautiful town, he says, "Telluride is a community that is very close to my heart. There is nothing like the feeling you get when you first enter the valley floor and you are surrounded by the stunning colors. The more time I spend in Telluride the more space it takes up in my heart, and this painting captures that feeling. Straus begins with a series of photos, often taken from a personal experience or reference images, to make his own statement, which requires intense focus. The final image is analyzed using a computer to isolate the best colors for the scene, condensing and simplifying. Cool or warm, these selections create depth, perspective, and emotional response. A stylus is the tool of choice as he carefully identifies the gradations of shade and hue, utilizing contour lines to describe a landscape's horizontal, diagonal, or vertical quality. Time-consuming and tedious, each stroke or dot of color requires a specific and deliberate decision out of hundreds of options. Once satisfied with the detail and composition, the artwork is transferred onto a large sheet of special paper with dye, not ink. The transfer image is laid on coated aluminum and heated until the dye transmutes into a gas (sublimation), which fuses and bonds to the shiny coated aluminum on a molecular level. The result is a unique, luminous image that allows light to reflect through to the base metal, intensified by the rich palette. The phenomenal depth and tonal range of color cannot be produced by any other method, including the highest-resolution museum-quality printing. Finally, the sheet is coated in a glossy protective resin to give it a nearly mirrored finish. The work is now preserved for at least the next 100 years. The finished piece is shipped, suitable for hanging, and supported by a discreet 1.5” sub-frame which creates the illusion of floating against any surface. Framing and Mounting: The painting arrives with a pre-installed hanging wire as well as an optional custom secure cleat mounting system so the artwork can be hung right out of the box. The invisible edge frame is 1.3" brushed black aluminum. It is bonded to the artwork with VHB tape, which creates a water-impermeable bond. Once hung, the frame puts the artwork precisely 1.5" from the wall. Rubber bumpers on all four corners create stability and the illusion of floating.
