This modern American landscape painting was made by Hudson Valley artist, Tracy Helgeson. Here the artist channels influences from the American Realist and Color Field movements, most notably, the work of Wolf Kahn and Mark Rothko, respectively. This minimal abstracted landscape of a rural country setting highlights beautiful color relationships; bright blue sky balances a ground of brilliant golden orange. The saturated color field is divided by a tree line deeply recessed in contrast. The simple composition highlights the color relationships and really makes the piece sing! Faint illegible writing is scribed into the surface, which is meant to imply a handwritten note. A thin red, crimson colored border is revealed along the edge of the painting. The artist applies gesso to the panel before painting, which leaves a slightly raised texture, and the surface is protected with a gloss varnish.
The horizontal painting measures 18 x 14 x 2 inches and has black painted sides so it's ready to hang as is.
The artist's signature is located on the back along with sturdy wire the hanging.
About the Artist:
Tracy Helgeson is inspired by the architecture of the landscape. The softly rolling hills, winding country roads and shimmering poplar trees surrounding her home outside Cooperstown offer sanctuary and stimulation for this one-time graphic designer/illustrator.
Many viewers will recognize the overtones of painters Hans Hoffman, Wolf Kahn and Mark Rothko in Helgeson's luminous paintings. Although Helgeson borrows from the visual languages of these established artists, she also adds a distinctly personal inflection to her work. She is closest in feel to Kahn - in the choice and use of her colors and tendency for strong diagonal compositions. Though pictorial interpretations of the landscape are also common for both artists, Helgeson isn't afraid to venture into abstraction.
There is a dissonance of color and contrast in some of these paintings that couldn't work in the hands of a less capable artist.
Helgeson's paintings are not Currier and Ives-like portrayals of the landscape. They are the images that linger in your mind's eye after an autumn sunset or a drive by a wheat field on a hot summer day; you recall everything as being a little more vivid, a little brighter and turned up a notch or two so you won't forget it.
Tracy Helgeson was born in Minnesota, in 1964. She attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1983, majoring in Graphic Design. She also attended the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) where she studied illustration. Philadelphia was a great influence on Tracy and it was there that her work began to take on a unique style. She also learned the under painting skills and glazing techniques that distinguish her current work.
In 2003, Tracy and her family moved to upstate New York. With the children in school, she has finally been able to devote more time and energy to her personal work. Tracy began painting landscapes, greatly inspired by the natural beauty surrounding the farmhouse that she lives and works in.

- The Orange Wall of San Miguel #2By Carole GarlandLocated in Palm Desert, CAA quiet street of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is the subject of this painting by Carole Garland. An elderly woman cautiously makes her way along a narrow path using a tree to lend support. The orange wall provides much needed shade in the afternoon heat. Light seeps through the branches of a colorful bougainvillea patterning the orange bulwark. Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity of this quiet backstreet in a Mexican town. A special moment in time is brought to life. Garland uses the scumbling technique and a paint laden palette knife to achieve texture and depth in the leaves, the branches and the rough pavement of the street. This oil on wood panel is 16"x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand-alone artwork but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #1. Together they are 16"x 40". Artist Carole Garland has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern California, including several juried California Art Club exhibits and individual shows at TAG Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work has recently appeared at the West Los Angeles College Art Gallery; the Rose Cafe, Venice; Topanga Canyon Art...Category
