About

William Jones British, (c.1798-1860) Taking a Rest Oil on canvas Image size: 19.25 inches x 29.25 inches Size including frame: 25.25 inches x 35.25 inches William Jones was a sporting artist who worked during the early to middle part of the 1800’s. Whilst little is known about his life, he was one of a few artists to produce shooting scenes and angling scenes in the early part of the 19th century. He does not appear to have exhibited in London but would have found a ready market amongst landowners and wealthy patrons who enjoyed their sporting pursuits. Some of his shooting and angling subjects were reproduced as engravings by H Pyall. His scenes appear similar to that of Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and it is widely believed they were related. Whilst he did not exhibit works during his lifetime his paintings have gained in popularity during the 20th century. A number of his angling paintings were in the Arthur N Gilbey Collection sold by Christies in April 1940, including May Fly Fishing (1832), Fishing for Pike and Fly Fishing (1834). His works are also described and illustrated in Angling in British Art by Walter Shaw Sparrow. Some of his works were found in the Paul Mellon Collection and were also sold by Frost and Reed during the late 1960's. His works are represented in the Witt Library and the Yale Centre for British Art. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art
