"Early Evening Stroll"
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Jim's of Lambertville Fine Art Gallery is proud to present this piece by Harry Leith-Ross (1886 - 1973). The son of an English father and a Dutch mother, Harry Leith-Ross was born in the British Colony of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean a thousand miles off the southeast coast of Africa. His first formal art instruction began in England under Stanhope Forbes, followed by studies with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian in Paris. Leith-Ross came to the United States to enroll at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1910, and then to Woodstock, in 1913. It was in Woodstock at the Art Students League, under the tutelage of Birge Harrison and John F. Carlson, that Leith-Ross would receive the training that most influenced his career as an artist. There he formed a lifelong friendship with fellow artist, John Folinsbee. The two artists shared a studio during this time and participated in several joint exhibitions exclusively featuring their work, including an exhibit at the Louis...

"Girl in Pareu"
By RAD Miller
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Robert Alexander Darrah “R.A.D.” Miller (1905 - 1966) Robert Alexander Darrah Miller, called “RAD” by his friends, was born in Philadelphia. He enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1923 to 1927 under the tutelage of Daniel Garber. In 1928, Miller moved to Bucks County where he would meet and marry Celia Belden Marshall, daughter of Dr. George M. Marshall, who at that time owned the Phillips Mill property. Nearly a year later, in 1929, a committee headed by artist, William Lathrop, negotiated to purchase the Mill property from Dr. Marshall for the purpose of holding art exhibitions. Thus, the Phillips Mill Art Association was formed. RAD Miller was a regular exhibitor at the Phillips Mill with the traditional New Hope Impressionists. Many of the original founders of the New Hope Art Colony, set in their ways, frowned upon the concept of modernist painting. A decision was made by the Association to not include the growing group of modernist painters in the area to exhibit with them at Phillips Mill. Although clearly not a traditional impressionist, Miller was not being excluded with the others, largely because his father-in-law formerly owned the mill and was one of the Association’s board of directors. RAD was sympathetic to his fellow modernists. In 1933, he was one of the original members of the Independents, a group formed for modernist artists who chose to embark on a more non-traditional creative path. They would exhibit in tandem with the Impressionists but at different locations. Around the time of his arrival to New Hope in 1928, Miller struck up a friendship with Thomas Hart Benton, and in 1932 he worked under Benton on a mural project. RAD’s paintings...

The Silk Mills in New Hope, Pennsylvania Impressionist Regional Landscape
Located in Doylestown, PA
"The Silk Mills in New Hope" is an Impressionist, Regional landscape by Pennsylvania painter John Pierce Barnes. Classic in its vibrant colors and highly energetic brush strokes, this 25" x 25" oil on canvas is framed in a 22k gold reproduction frame and the painting is estate stamped on the stretcher and canvas on verso. John Pierce Barnes was born in Philadelphia in 1893. He graduated from high school in the Germantown area of Philadelphia and served in the U.S. Navy during the First World War. After his discharge from the Navy, John began his training at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Design, now the University of the Arts. Barnes then studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia from 1921-1925. He exhibited watercolors and pastels in the Annual Philadelphia Water Color and Miniature Exhibitions of 1921 and 1922. John Pierce Barnes studied with Daniel Garber, and also Henry Hugh Breckenridge and Arthur B. Carles at the PAFA. He was awarded Cresson Travel Scholarships in 1923 and 1924. These awards enabled him to study in France, Belgium and Holland. John Pierce Barnes experimented in several styles, but is best known for his oil paintings of landscapes and portraits rendered in the Impressionist style. Some of his work was painted in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, some in Europe, but mostly in eastern Pennsylvania. Up until the time of his death in 1954, Mr. Barnes was employed by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) Victor Design Division in Camden, New Jersey. He is credited with designing a past RCA logo...

'Mother and Child', Woman Impressionist, Paris, Académie Julian, Benezit
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Initialed lower right, 'A.E.M' for Anna Elisabeth Munch (Danish, 1876-1960) and painted circa 1940. This notable Danish Modernist first studied with Karl Jensen (1889) and C. N. Overgaard (1891–1892). She later traveled and studied in Italy and, subsequently, at the Académie Julian under Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. After her return to Denmark, Munch became a student of the Impressionist Julius Paulsen (1895-1897) and made her début at the 1898 Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition. Munch became the first Danish woman to receive commissions for large devotional altarpieces and her early subjects were often derived from Nordic and Christian mythology. These themes were also explored in the large fresco commissions she completed after studying fresco with Joakim Skovgaard (1909-10). Munch continued her studies in both France and Italy and also traveled extensively to Sweden and Norway. Together with the writer Sophie Breum, Munch built a house on the island of Funen at the artist's colony of Kerteminde. Munch illustrated several of Breum's books and, through her, was introduced to the women's movement. She furthered her art studies with Fritz Syberg...
