A large and wonderful Modernist still life of a cast iron pot, squash and ladle by artist Flora Schofield. Framed to 24" x 26". A painter, print maker and sculptor, Flora Schofield (Schoenfield), was born in Lanark, Illinois. She studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and taught Saturday classes there until 1904. Schoenfield also studied with Charles Hawthorne, B.J.O Nordfeldt and William Zorach in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She studied with Albert Gleizes, Fernand Leger and Natalia Goncharova in Paris, France. In 1923, Schofield’s abstractions caused a split at the venerable Chicago Society of Artists. When her artwork was was accepted by the jury, the notable Impressionist painter Pauline Palmer and the notable Modernist painter Carl Hoeckner got into a row that ended-up splitting the group. The Impressionists then broke away into their own organization called the ”Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors”. A fellow student was Kyuzo Furuya who, Heaney recalled, goaded him into taking himself seriously as an artist. But Heaney's deepest friendship was with Clayton Sumner (C.S.) Price, an artist twenty-three years Heaney's senior who settled in Portland in 1929 and who would become a pioneering figure in Oregon modern painting. Heaney admired and emulated Price's dedication to art-making and found in the older man an important companion. Heaney's prints of the 1920s and 1930s were mostly woodcuts, a technique he learned from Catherine DeWitt MacKenzie, a fellow student at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Image size: 14.25"H x 17.25"W. Signed indistinctly lower right. China Camp State Park is a 1,514-acre park in San Rafael, California. The park is known for its scenic views, hiking and mountain biking trails, and open spaces. It also features a historic Chinese American shrimp-fishing village and a salt marsh. By the mid-1880s, Chinese Americans had established a settlement of about 500 people in a village they called China Camp. Many of these villagers were originally from Canton, China, and supported themselves and their families here by shrimp fishing in San Francisco Bay. The village had three general stores, a barbershop, and a marine supply shop at its peak. China Camp was one of about twenty-six other shrimp-fishing villages along the coast that supported Chinese American immigrants fleeing San Francisco due to racial prejudice and persecution. Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the population of China Camp ballooned as nearly 10,000 residents of San Francisco’s Chinatown fled the destruction and mayhem. Roger Holt was born in New Haven, Connecticut. After attending Rollins College and St. Paul's School of Art in Minnesota, he traveled extensively through the United States and Europe, forming his educational background. Hold was the recipient of five major awards, Mr. Holt exhibited in thirteen museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, Carnegie Institute and the United Nations Building. Settling in Jerome, Arizona in 1954, Roger assisted his wife, Shan Holt, in the operation of the Verde Valley Artist's Gallery and concentrated on his work, experimenting with different painting surfaces such as masonite, canvas board and stiff cardboard. His early work identified with the Expressionist school, while his later work tends toward increasing abstraction. Roger Holt's paintings are included in the collections of Abraham Ribicoff, Vincent Price, John McCloy, Artie Shaw, Burl Ives and numerous universities across the country including the Ogden Museum of Southern Art at the University of New Orleans.
