About the Item
Artist: Jean-Desire Bascoules (French 1886-1976), signed lower left (incised into paint), dated 1919.
After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, Bascoulès studied with Fernand Cormon in Paris. He then went to Algiers. Bascoules exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1914, receiving a bronze medal in 1921, a silver medal in 1922, the Romain-Thirion prize in 1924 and a gold medal in 1925. He exhibited hors concours and was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1932. In 1933, he exhibited work at the Salon des Tuileries. He was represented at the 1937 Exposition Internationale. In 2003, as part of the Algerian event, Djazaïr, a Year of Algeria in France, work by Bascoulès was shown in the exhibition Painters from the Other Shore. Algiers 1830-1930 ( Les Peintres de l'autre rive. Alger 1830-1930) held at the Musée de la Castre in Cannes. He was also represented in 2003 at the exhibitions Luminous Algeria, Through the Eyes of Seascape Painters (1830-1960) ( Lumineuse Algérie, sous le regard des peintres de marines (1830-1960)) at the Musée National de la Marine in Toulon and The School of Algiers ( L'École d'Alger) at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux.
