About the Item
In what appears to be a moment of defeat, the subject sits glassy-eyed in the corner of a boxing ring. A momentary respite, perhaps, before he begins the voluntary abuse to his body again. The vivid blue ropes surrounding the figure are picked up in the blue underwear shown peeking out of his shorts and bring out the bruised tones in his skin. This artwork is framed in a black wood frame.

Pyrrhic Victory
a victory that inflicts such a devastating toll on the victor that it is tantamount to defeat. Someone who wins a Pyrrhic victory has been victorious in some way, though the heavy toll negates a true sense of achievement or profit.
This series of paintings, the “Pyrrhic Series” is about exploring the mental, physical and emotional damage that takes place in the pursuit of dreams. I have always been drawn to the concept of a Pyrrhic victory, as it applies equally to any life, or person, pursuing their ambitions. I chose to use boxers and fighters as the primary symbol of that pursuit, as their struggle towards a dream has an exceptionally visual and theatrical quality. Every upward step on a fighter's path towards a dream damages him even when he is successful. The path taken to arrive at victory often wounds him beyond repair.
I have a personal connection to the world of boxing, in high school I joined a gym for a time period as a way to gain self-confidence. In the last few years I joined a new gym and was fascinated by the people and stories that populate it. All of the fighters depicted in these paintings are friends and acquaintances I personally know. They all have heroic and tragic stories, and one of my goals with this series was to show these figures as an intersection between the mythical and the brutal reality of being a professional fighter.

At the age of 14 Peter Lupkin began working at his father’s stained glass studio. It was through this apprenticeship that he was exposed to the use of traditional symbolism as method of communicating a larger narrative. Peter draws from everyday life, history and literature to create scenes that are at the same time realistic and fantastical. He often uses pre-existing stories when he is developing an image. He will then take these narratives and expose a less studied side of them, or try to bring them into a contemporary context. Ultimately Lupkin’s goal is to use modern imagery in conjunction with traditional techniques and connect them with contemporary society. Peter lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His painting studio is situated above his family’s stained glass studio where he continues to work alongside two of his brothers William and Ben whose close proximity make them ideal models.

"I started by painting interiors, being interested in space and perspective through my studies. These scenes evolved, when I added the human figure. I focused more on the human figure and its relation to the background. The human figure is more present than ever in my paintings now. As a woman artist I’ve been preoccupied with the female form and its imagery. One of my goals was to capture the solitary moments and the nude’s relation to the surrounding space. My interest turned from depicting the space to rendering the atmosphere and the scene as a whole, the feeling a woman adds to the environment: warmth, desire, joy, a feeling of power and control, or the opposite – sadness, despair. Here is a collection of figurative paintings, exploring the nudes in interior spaces, seeing the nudes from my perspective, as a woman artist, considering the physical and spiritual realities of a woman’s body, in a new level of intimacy.
