About the Item

Judgment of Paris Van Zevenberghen Georges Brussels 1877 – 1968, Belgian Painter Signature: Signed bottom left and dated 37 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: Image size 50 x 60 cm, frame size 68 x 79 cm The painting “Judgment of Paris” tells a story from Greek mythology, which was one of the events that led up to the Trojan War and in later versions of the story to the foundation of Rome. The subject became popular in art from the late Middle Ages onwards and was painted by Raphael, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Rubens, Watteau, Angelica Kauffman, Renoir and Cézanne, André Lhote, Salvador Dalí and many others. Eris, the goddess of discord, was not invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. In revenge, Eris brought a golden apple, inscribed, "To the fairest one," which she threw into the wedding. Three goddesses, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, agreed to have Paris of Troy choose the fairest one. Paris chose Aphrodite, because she bribed him by giving him the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta, wife of Menelaus. Paris carried Helen off to Troy, and the Greeks invaded Troy for Helen's return. This was the cause of the Trojan war. Figuratively, the phrase, "The Judgment of Paris," can mean the ultimate origin of a war or other event. Biography: Van Zevenberghen Georges was born in 1877 in Brussels ( Sint-Jans-Molenbeek), Belgium. He was an intimistic, realistic and post-impressionist painter of portraits, figures, nudes, genre scenes, interiors, landscapes and still lifes. He was also watercolourist. He studied at the Fine Art Academies of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean (1895-96) and Brussels (1899-90), where he became a teacher (1933-48). He was a pupil of master teacher and artist Jan Stobbaerts (1838 – 1914), who had a strong influence on his work. He was married to Georgette Iserbyt, initially one of his pupils. Van Zevenberghen resides in Paris for the first time in 1903 and exhibits in Brussels at the Triennial Salon, made a lasting friendship with G. Charlier in 1909, travels through France in 1926 with friends-artists (V. De Saedeleer, A. Oleffe, Ph. Cockx, H. Thomas and R. Janssens), got price Emile Sacré in 1932. He was a member of the Groups “Labeur” and “Pour L’Art”, also member of the “Belgian Royal Academy” (1946). Van Zevenberghen died in 1968 in his hometown. His paintings can be found in private and public collections, including museums in Antwerp, Brussels, Mons, the Charlier-Museum in Sint-Joost-ten-Node (Belgium), Riga (Latvia) and Barcelona (Spain). • Hubert Malfait, 1898 – 1971, Belgian Painter, 'Sitting Nude', Signed top left
    Located in Bruges, BE
Hubert Malfait Astene 1898 – 1971 Sint-Martens-Latem Belgian Painter 'Sitting Nude' Signature: Signed top left Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: Image size 90 x 60 cm, frame size 114 x 84 cm Biography: Malfait Hubert was a Belgian painter who belonged to the third Latem School. He was born in 1898 in Astene, Belgium, as the son of the local municipal secretary Jules Malfait. Growing up amidst influential figures like Emile Claus, Valerius De Saedeleer, and Albijn Van den Abeele, who were friends of his father, Malfait developed an early affinity for art. During the war years, he studied at the Gent Academy of Fine Arts alongside Jules De Sutter. A pivotal moment in Malfait's career occurred in 1924 during the exhibition "Laethemsche Kunstenaarskolonie," where he met critics André De Ridder, Paul-Gustave van Hecke, and Georges Marlier. This led him to become an integral part of the avant-garde expressionist group around Gustave De Smet, Frits Van den Berghe, and Constant Permeke. Progressive Brussels galleries strongly supported him, considering him the flagbearer of a new generation of expressionists. Despite economic challenges and the bankruptcy of Le Centaure, Malfait's primary supporter, in 1932, he continued to shape the Brussels art scene. Emmanuel de Bom defended him, asserting the vitality of expressionism. Malfait reemerged in 1934 with an exhibition at Galerie Louis Manteau. In the 1930s, Malfait was a prominent figure in the Gent art scene, showcasing his works at venues like Ars and later at Galerie Vyncke-van Eyck. The economic crisis and Le Centaure's bankruptcy affected Malfait, but he resurged in 1934 with an exhibition at Galerie Louis Manteau. The war years marked a shift in Malfait's exhibitions, with major solo shows occurring in 1944. He exhibited paintings in Galerie Brueghel and drawings in Galerie Apollo. The Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Oostende organized an extensive retrospective just before his death in 1971. Malfait's artistic evolution saw him transition from impressionism to expressionism, influenced by Eugène Laermans and Jakob Smits...

    Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire

A beautifully brushed piece. Signature: Signed lower left Dimensions: Framed: 22"x27" Unframed: 13"x18" Provenance: With thanks to Denise Bazetoux for confirming the authenticity of this work This painting is included in the Catalogue Raisonne of Henri Lebasque - Volume I No. 1409 Maitre Blache, Versailles, 21st November 1967 Lot 117 Maitre Lombrail, Enghien-les-Bains, 23rd September 1984 Sotheby's, London, 1st July 1987 Lot 317 Miromesnil Fine Art, Paris - 1988 Henri Lebasque studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers, then, after moving to Paris in 1886, studied briefly under Bonnat, then under Humbert, whom he assisted in the decoration of the Panthéon. More importantly, he met and learned from Pissarro. In 1893 he met Luce and Signac at the Salon des Indépendants, and as a result he adopted Pointillism for a few years. In the 1900s he lived in Lagny with his family and painted landscapes of the neighbouring Marne forest. His painting underwent drastic changes when he discovered the south of the country. He would thereafter live in other French regions: Vendée, Brittany and Normandy, where he stayed at Les Andelys for some time, but his home from home was between Sanary and Nice. He painted members of his family in the settings in which he lived, mostly in Provence. His work shares some themes of his friend Bonnard. But although he exhibited with the Fauves, and admired Matisse, Rouault, Dufy, Valtat and Manguin (who introduced him to the Midi), he remained distinct from them in style. Lebasque was well known in his lifetime. He collaborated on the decorations of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and of the Atlantic liner Paris. He is remembered for: Nymphs at their Bath; The Sunshade; Girl with Hydrangeas; Great Nude on a Pink Sofa. He took part in the following collective exhibitions: Salon des Indépendants, 1886; Salon des Artistes Français; and later the Salon d'Automne, of which he was a founding member in 1903 and on whose committee he sat until his death. A set of his works was shown in 1937 at Masters of Independent Art ( Maîtres de l'Art Indépendant) at the Petit Palais. In 1957, 20 years after his death, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice, and in 1981 his works were exhibited at St-Paul-de-Vence.
