Circle of John Vanderbank British, (1694-1739) Portrait of a Gentleman Oil on canvas Image size: 29½ inches x 24½ inches Size including frame: 37½ inches x 32½ inches A charming half-length portrait of a gentleman, circle of John Vanderbank . The sitter, expensively dressed in a fashionable wig and velvet dress coat is clearly a gentleman of note . The artist has depicted him within a feigned oval looking confidently out at the viewer. The portrait is well painted and sensitively executed by an artist of great ability in a similar style to John Vanderbank. John Vanderbank was born in London on 9 September 1694 to a tapestry weaver. He studied under Sir Godfrey Kneller at the Great Queen Street art academy and later started his own art school in St Martin’s Lane. Vanderbank specialised in portraits and became well known for his paintings of eminent people of the time. He also produced a number of book illustrations most notably the portrait of Sir Isaac Newton used in the physicists work, Principia. The painting is housed in its original period carved and giltwood frame, which is in excellent condition.
