About the Item

Praying Madonna with her face turned towards the sky and little angels. Oil on canvas, 99x75 cm without frame and 134 x 110 cm with frame by the painter Benedetto Luti (Florence 1666 - Rome 1720) State of conservation: excellent Luti was born in Florence; it was his father who deepened his son's artistic vein, sending him to the studio of the painter Gabbiani. After a first period as a Florentine apprentice, Luti, in 1961, moved to Rome, thanks also to the intercession of Cosimo 111 Medici, who appreciated his skills in pastel portraits. In Rome Luti, where he was able to take advantage of the advice of Ciro Ferri, a Tuscan painter, became, together with Giuseppe Chiari, one of the most talented artists of the classicist current of the eighteenth century, derived from the teachings of the Bolognese school and followed by Carlo Maratta and Francesco Trevisani. Luti was a notable collector and art dealer. This introduction to the art and poetics of the great artist of the past Benedetto Luti helped us to introduce in the catalog of his works, this praying Madonna and angels, an oil on canvas, of exquisite workmanship that presents some characteristics of his pictorial style. In fact, to call into question the "Morellian" method, useful for recognizing the hand of an artist, at first sight the way of picturing the hands that are tapered, a detail that can be found punctually in many paintings by Luti, such as example in the Christ of the banquet in the house of the Pharisee, in Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire ", and in the other version of Jesus in the same subject preserved in Rome, at the Academy of St. Luke 3. Moving now on the face of the Madonna with the face facing the sky, it shows an expression that is almost identical to that visible in the Christ of the Supper at Emmaus, at the Accademia di S. Luca in Rome ". While for the motif of the eyes turned towards the sky, the canvas depicting Bacchus and Ariadne returns punctually in the face of Arianna at Palazzo Chigi di Ariccia. Another document, very important in Luti's painting, is the study of the drapery comparable in the paintings cited above; finally, the blue and red coloring of the Madonna's dress is the same that Luti used in Christ's clothes, always visible in the paintings mentioned above.The painting in question is datable between 1700 and 1710 approximately, near the Supper in Emmaus of the Academy of St. Luke, and at the Supper in the Pharisee's house, Kedleston Hall, mentioned above.
