Julián Grau Santos is one of the most outstanding and prominent figurative painters and illustrators on the national scene. He was born in Canfranc (Huesca) in 1937. Heir to a family tradition, he is the son of the painter Emilio Grau Sala, a significant artist from the School of Paris, and of the also extraordinary painter Ángeles Santos, a prominent member of the group of surrealist painters of the years twenty. In 1954 he moved with his family to Barcelona, ​​where he attended the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts. In these early years he was greatly influenced, in addition to Van Gogh, by impressionists and post-impressionists such as Sisley, Cezanne, Renoir, Seurat, Vuillard ... whom he discovered on his first visits to Paris, the city where his father lived. In the 60s he was closely linked to Cuenca, where he lived temporarily, a city that at that time was in full artistic effervescence, where he developed a multitude of works with strong expressiveness and very material brushstrokes. In 1978 he set his definitive residence in Madrid, where he currently lives, working not only on his painting but also as an illustrator and draftsman, eventually collaborating with various magazines, such as ABC Cultural, La Razón and El Cultural de El Mundo, among others. Since 1980 he has been a member of the Societé Nationale des Beaux Arts. Painter not attached to any artistic trend, however he has contributed to renew the artistic panorama of the figurative tradition. He is considered by some to be the master of 20th century Spanish color. He has participated in numerous individual exhibitions throughout his artistic career in various galleries both nationally and internationally such as Sala Parés, Galería Biosca, Galerie Saint Placide (Paris), Grand Palais (Paris), Justin Lester Gallery (Los Angeles) , Art Expo (New York). In 1993 the Mapfre Vida Cultural Foundation organized an anthological exhibition of the artist.
