About the Item

Conrad Kiesel was a successful German painter and sculptor, working in both Berlin and Munich during the latter half of the nineteenth-century. Kiesel is known for his interest in exoticism and executed many genre and figurative scenes in an Orientalist mode. Conrad Kiesel gained fame as a painter of portraits, classical genre scenes, and nudes. He discovered his artistic talent first in sculpture, his earliest training coming under the acclaimed sculptor Fritz Schaper. Kiesel soon switched his efforts to painting and moved to Berlin to study with Fritz Paulsen. Paulsen specialized in portrait and genre paintings, probably serving as Kiesel’s introduction to formal portraiture. In the early 1870s, Kiesel continued his education while working under Wilhem Sohn in his native town of Dusseldorf. Sohn was a well-known and respected painter of historical subjects and genre pieces and helped Kiesel to develop his superior ability to paint materials such as silk. Both peers and critics recognized Kiesel’s talent, and he received gold medals in Berlin in 1889 and 1900. The artist was also elected a member of the Academy of Berlin in 1892. Kiesel worked and exhibited in Berlin, Munich, and Paris, obtaining an honorable mention at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Kiesel excelled in several genres. He received numerous commissions for his official portraits, including one from Kaiser Wilhelm II. He also gained recognition for his classical genre pieces, harem scenes, and nudes. An underlying theme in many of his works was his love of women and the female form. One of Kiesel’s favorite subjects was idyllic female portraiture. In 1881 he painted a portrait of his wife, and from this time forth continued to create works of beautiful women. Paintings by Kiesel can be found in prominent collections throughout Europe.
