Lord Byron Standing on the Shore with Sailing Ship at Sea Antique Oil Painting

Early 20th Century

About the Item

Lord Byron Standing on the Shore British School, circa 1919 Oil on panel, framed inscirbed/ signed? lower left and indistinctly dated Frame: 7 × 8 inches Panel: 6 × 7 inches Provenance: private collection, UK Condition: Good condition with age-related wear. Please refer to the photographs for further details. A fascinating small oil painting depicting the celebrated English Romantic poet Lord Byron (1788–1824) standing dramatically on a rocky shoreline, with a sailing ship visible on the turbulent sea beyond. The identification of the sitter is supported by the material attached to the reverse of the panel, which includes three images of Byron. Most notably, one reproduces the same full-length composition as the painting, showing Byron standing beside the rocks with the sea and distant vessel beyond. The figure is presented in characteristic early 19th-century dress, wearing pale trousers, a white shirt and dark cloak with a richly coloured waistcoat. The dark, stormy sky and breaking waves create a suitably Romantic atmosphere around the solitary figure who was known for his love of sailing and adventurous travel. The diminutive scale adds considerable charm, while the finely painted sailing ship and dramatic coastal setting give the composition an impressive sense of depth despite its small proportions. An unusual and highly decorative portrait of one of the defining figures of the Romantic movement, made particularly interesting by the comparative images of Byron preserved on the reverse.
