This beautiful exhibited British 1940's interior portrait oil painting is by noted artist Francis Edwin Hodge. Painted in 1941 it was first exhibited at the Royal Academy that year entitled 'A corner of the dressing room' and again at Southport Atkinson Art Gallery in 1946. The composition is of a young ballerina, sat in the corner of a dressing adjusting her ballet shoes. A mirror affords the viewer two views of the dancer. Her tutu and out stretched limbs are beautifully illuminated and outlined, suggesting her gracefulness, even at repose. A really charming twice exhibited ballet portrait oil painting and an excellent example of Hodge's work.

Provenance: Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1941 No, 450 entitled A corner of the dressing room.
Exhibited at the Atkinson Art Gallery, Southport, 1946, labels verso.
Also signed and inscribed with title verso.

Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 20 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an ornate Bourlet silvered frame, 32 inches by 28 inches and in good condition.
Francis Edwin Hodge (1881-1949) was an English painter. Born in Devon, Hodge studied at the Westminster School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. Among his other teachers were Augustus John, William Orpen and Frank Brangwyn and he also studied for a short time in Paris. Hodge enlisted in the Artists' Rifles at the start of World War I and served as a captain in the Royal Field Artillery on the Western Front. He continued to paint during the conflict and some of those paintings are now held by the Imperial War Museum. His work was entered to the painting event in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics. During World War Two, the War Artists' Advisory Committee purchased examples of his work. He married Hazel Bruce Dunlop (1911- 2005) an artist and art teacher and they lived in Chelsea.
Hodge was a member of or affiliated with the following organisations:1915: Elected to the Royal Society of British Artists, 1927: Elected member of Royal Institute of Oil Painters, 1929: Elected member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, 1931: Elected member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. Hodge was also a member of the Chelsea Arts Club.
